Lions knock off Miners in non-conference finale

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Missouri S&T's baseball team dropped its final non-conference game of the 2018 season Tuesday night as the Miners were knocked off 11-2 by Lindenwood.

The Lions took an early lead in the game and broke the game open in the middle innings as they dropped the Miners to 21-24 on the season.  They grabbed the lead in the opening inning with a pair of unearned runs, scoring one off a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt and the second on an RBI double by Dominic Revetta.

S&T cut the lead in half in the fourth when Kaleb Reid (Smithville, MO/Smithville) reached on an error with two outs, allowing Matt Gruse (Neenah, WI/Neenah) to score, but Lindenwood (25-22) scored three times in the bottom half of the inning on a run-scoring single by Wes Degener and a two-run single by Paul Sherwood to extend its lead to 5-1.

The Lions tacked on two more runs in the fifth and four in the seventh before the Miners scored again in the ninth, as Nathan Volkmann (Liberty, MO/Liberty)'s ground out scored Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, MO/Lutheran-St. Charles).

Lindenwood outhit S&T 15-4 in the contest; Swindle had two of the Miners' four hits.  Blaine Dunbar (West Plains, MO/West Plains), the first of six pitcher employed by the Miners Tuesday, took the loss on the mound.

Missouri S&T returns to the field Friday when it begins its final Great Lakes Valley Conference series of the season at Truman State.  The Miners and Bulldogs will play doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday at noon each day.
