Missed chances prove costly to Miners in Sunday's twinbill

ROLLA, Mo. – Missed opportunities proved costly to Missouri S&T's baseball team Sunday afternoon, as Augustana swept the Miners for the second day in succession to take all four games of the weekend set at the S&T Ballpark.

The Vikings won the opener 6-3, then took the nightcap with a late rally by a count of 7-4.

The Miners (3-7) overcame a three-run deficit to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth in game two, but the Vikings (9-0) got a two-out, two-run single from Jordan Barth to retake the lead in the seventh and held off the Miners over the final three innings.

Augustana took the lead in game two on Barth's solo home run in the second, then extended the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth off S&T starter Anthony Garza (Belleviille, IL/Belleville East).  But in the Miners' half of the fifth, S&T batted around the order and knotted the score at three.

The inning began when Kaleb Reid (Smithville, MO/Smithville) reached on a bunt single, then Zach Bracken (Berthoud, CO/Berthoud) reached on an infield hit.  After the runners were sacrificed along to second and third, Matt Miller (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) hit a slow roller up the first base line that Viking pitcher Jed Schmidt bobbled  as Reid crossed the plate with the first run.

Cameron Burk (Nacogdoches, TX/Cushing) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, which was followed by a sacrifice fly by Matt Knickerbocker (Bayfield, CO/Bayfield) and an opposite field single by Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, MO/Lutheran-St. Charles) to tie the contest.

The Miners took their first lead of the afternoon in the sixth as Bracken was hit by a pitch with one out, advanced to third on Drew Aldana (El Paso, TX/JM Hanks)'s hit and scored when Aldana got into a rundown between first and second; a throw to third to try and get Bracken was wild, which allowed him to score.

However, the Vikings answered back in the seventh, getting a hit and a walk with one out.  Bryan Nolan (Ballwin, MO/St. Louis University HS) struck out Lucas Barry for the second out, but Barth greeted Luke Marcheschi (Bloomington, IL/Central Catholic) by hitting a double into the corner in right to chase home both runners.

Augustana added another run in the inning, then got a double play to thwart a Miner scoring threat in the seventh.  S&T had runners on base in each of the last two innings as well but came away empty.

Swindle and Reid had two hits apiece for S&T, who was outhit 11-6 in the game.  Matthew Lamb (Doniphan, NE/Grand Island) took the loss in relief.

In game one, the Vikings took a 2-0 lead in the first and added to it with three in the fifth before the Miner offense came to life.

Knickerbocker led off the fifth with a triple to deep right center and scored on a hit by Swindle, who proceeded to steal second, reach third on a wild pitch and come home on a two-run single by Bracken that also scored Tim Lira (Granger, IN/Penn).

However, the Miners – who were given eight walks and had four batters hit by pitches in the game – couldn't take full advantage of those opportunities as they stranded 12 runners in the contest.

Dalton Erger (Imperial, MO/Seckman) was the losing pitcher for S&T in game one, as the Miners were outhit 10-5.  Swindle had two of the Miners' five hits.

Missouri S&T returns to action Wednesday when it faces Missouri Southern in a single game in Joplin at 2 p.m.  The Miners beat the Lions 2-0 in Rolla on Feb. 14.
