Evansville, Ind. – The Missouri S&T Miners lost in straight sets at Southern Indiana on Saturday for its third straight loss. The Miners (4-7, 0-2 GLVC) had 49 kills to 42 for the Screaming Eagles (3-7, 1-1 GLVC) but committed six more attack errors than USI.
S&T faced deficits of four and six points in the opening set and both times were able to get back within a point but were never able to tie the set. The Miners trailed 19-18 after a block by
Carson Talley (St. Louis, Mo./Affton) and
Kyley Thompson (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) but the Eagles responded with three straight points all off of errors by S&T to extend their lead to 22-18. Talley and
Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) brought the Miners back to within 22-20 with back-to-back kills but USI scored three of the final four points to take the opening set 25-21.
S&T trailed early in the second set before going on a 7-2 run thanks to five Eagle errors to take a 9-6 lead. USI countered with a 7-2 run of its own to regain a 13-11 lead after an error by Combs. The Miners battled back and eventually took a 24-22 lead and had two set points to try and even the match but a service error and a kill by Shawntel James squared the set at 24.
S&T regained the lead after a service error by Casey Cepicky but gave it right back when
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) committed a service error. The Miners trailed 26-25 but got a kill from
Carson Talley (St. Louis, Mo./Affton) to tie it at 26. USI regained the lead after an error by
Caroline Dykes (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence) but S&T got back-to-back points on an error by Elexis Coleman and a kill from Dykes to go ahead 28-27. The Miners had another chance to even the match but three straight errors gave the Eagles the win 30-28 and a 2-0 lead.
S&T held a 10-8 lead in the third set but a 6-1 run by Southern Indiana gave them a 14-11 advantage. The Miners battled back to within 16-15 but that was the closest they would get as the Eagles ended the match scoring nine of the final 15 points to complete the sweep.
S&T finished the contest with an attack percentage of .167 and was led offensively by
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) with 12 kills while
Ellen Schulz (Wildwood, Mo./Eureka) added 10 kills and Talley added eight kills.
Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside) and
Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood) combined for 40 set assists and Combs led the way with 18 digs.
USI had an attack percentage of .184 for the match and was led by Coleman with 13 kills. Mikaila Humphrey finished with 10 kills and Alyssa Yochum added eight kills. Cepicky had a match high 35 assists while Shannon Farrell had a match-high 21 digs.
The Miners are back at home on Friday when they take on McKendree at 7 p.m. It will be the start of a three match home stand for S&T.
