Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Miners used a six-run third inning to overcome an early 2-0 hole to win the second game of its doubleheader against William Jewell 11-5 on Sunday afternoon at the Ballpark at S&T. The Cardinals (17-19, 10-8 GLVC) won the opener 13-3.

Game 2 – Miners 11, William Jewell 5
William Jewell took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning on RBI singles from Christian Chalabi and Drew Standifer.

The Miners (19-18, 9-9 GLVC) answered in the third inning sending 11 batters to the plate scoring six runs on three hits and took advantage of three hit-by-pitches and a couple of Cardinal errors. Kaleb Reid (Smithville, MO/Smithville) got S&T on the scoreboard with a bases loaded single scoring Jack DeGarmo (Liberty, MO/Liberty North). With one out, Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, MO/Lutheran-St. Charles) reached on an error by the shortstop which allowed Reid and Eli Miller (Shelbyville, IL/Shelbyville) to score to make it 3-2. With two outs, Zach Bracken (Berthoud, CO/Berthoud) was hit by a pitch to reload the bases. Nathan Volkmann (Liberty, MO/Liberty) reached on an error scoring Reid to make it 4-2 and DeGarmo followed with a two-run single to left to cap the inning.

The Cardinals got a run back in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Chalabi but Anthony Garza (Belleviille, IL/Belleville East) was able to limit the damage to just one run as he got Brendan Carney to fly out to end the fourth.

The Miners got that run back in the home half of the fourth as Miller and Reid led off the inning with back-to-back singles. After a double play, Swindle lined a triple down the right field line to put S&T ahead 7-3.

Standifer drove in his second run of the game with a lead-off home run to right to open the fifth to cut the margin to 7-4. Jewell cut the lead to 7-5 in the sixth inning on an RBI single through the left side of the infield from Chalabi. The Cardinals eventually loaded the bases with two outs in the inning but Dalton Erger (Imperial, MO/Seckman) got Garrett McKinzie to fly out to shallow right on the first pitch to escape the jam.

S&T put the game away scoring four runs in its half of the sixth getting a big two-run single from Justus Nelson (Plymouth, MN/Robbinsdale Armstrong), a sacrifice fly from Bracken and an RBI triple from Volkmann.

Jewell got a runner on base in the seventh but Stuart Martin (Ajax, ON/Ajax) got a groundout and two strikeouts to seal the victory.
