Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Softball nine used a pair of late rallies to sweep Quincy on Saturday afternoon at the S&T Softball Field. The Lady Miners (14-17, 6-4 GLVC) took the opener 2-1 in 11 innings and then overcame an early five run deficit to take the nightcap 13-7.
Game 1 – Lady Miners 2 Quincy 1
The opening game of the doubleheader was scoreless until the Lady Hawks (10-14, 4-6 GLVC) broke through with a run in the top of the fifth on a groundout to short with two outs in the inning.
S&T tied the game in the bottom of the sixth.
Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) led off the inning with a single to center and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette ).
Kelly Heckemeyer (St. Elizabeth, Mo./St. Elizabeth) followed hitting a 0-1 pitch over the first base bag and down the right field line scoring Klein.
Savannah Fedorchak (Oakville, Mo./Oakville) followed with a single up the middle to put the go ahead run in scoring position. The Lady Miners were unable to capitalize though as
Hannah Franceschini (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) grounded out to end the inning.
Both sides had multiple opportunities to take the lead in the first three extra frames but neither one could get the clutch hit. Quincy left five runners on base in the extra innings while S&T also stranded five.
The Lady Miners scored the game winner in the 11
th. With one out,
Carley Hamann (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way North) singled to left center and advanced to second on a walk to
Ashley Rausch (Washington, Iowa/Washington). With two outs,
Avery English (Carterville, Ill./Carterville) hit a 2-2 pitch into the left center gap to score Hamann with the walk-off victory.
S&T rapped out eight hits in the opener with eight different players registering a hit. English picked up the victory pitching all 11 innings allowing one run on 12 hits with eight strikeouts against one walk.
Game 2 – Lady Miners 13 Quincy 7
The Lady Hawks sent 11 batters to the plate in the second inning scoring five times on six hits. All of that damage came after the first two hitters of the frame were retired.
The Lady Miners began to chip away getting a run in the third on a triple by Klein and Weiss drove her in with a sacrifice fly to center. S&T added two more in the fourth thanks to a two-out rally. Hamann was hit by a pitch and then Rausch hammered a 0-1 pitch over the fence in right for her second home run of the season.
Quincy got a run back in the fifth on a passed ball but
Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) was able to limit the damage. The Lady Miners added two more in the fifth on another two out rally. Weiss started it with a triple to center and scored on Heckemeyer's double to left center.
Hannah Smith (Oconomowoc, Wis./Catholic Memorial) came into run for Heckemeyer and scored on Fedorchak's double to left center.
S&T took the lead in the sixth sending 12 batters to the plate scoring eight runs on nine hits. Hamann started the rally with a walk and scored from first on Rausch's double to right center.
Olivia Young (Milstadt, Ill./Belleville Township), hitting for
Lori Badalamenti (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland ), gave the Lady Miners the lead with a single down the right field line.
Rachel Aiardo (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) and Klein followed with singles to load the bases. Weiss brought home Young with an infield single and then Heckemeyer brought home Aiardo with a single to center.
With one out, Weiss and Heckemeyer moved up to second and third on a wild pitch. Fedorchak drove in Weiss with a single to left center and put runners on the corner. With two outs, Hamann singled to right scoring Heckemeyer to make it 11-6. Rausch followed with her second double of the inning scoring English, running for Fedorchak, and Hamann to cap the scoring.
The Lady Hawks added a run in the seventh but it wouldn't be enough as S&T picked up its first sweep of Quincy since April 9, 2011 when they defeated the Lady Hawks 3-0 and 4-3 in 17 innings. The 13 runs and 16 hits were both season-highs for the Lady Miners.
S&T had six players record at least two hits in the contest led by Klein and Fedorchak with three hits each. Rausch drove in a career-high five runs in the victory while Weiss, Heckemeyer, Fedorchak and Hamann had two RBIs each. Viets improved to 7-8 with the complete game victory.
The Lady Miners are back at home on Sunday when they host Truman State in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. The Bulldogs split at Drury on Saturday dropping the opener 6-5 and then took the nightcap 10-2.
