Lady Miners earn split with walk off win over 14th ranked Southern Indiana



Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners upset 14th ranked Southern Indiana with a walk-off victory in the second game of its doubleheader 5-4 in eight innings on Sunday afternoon at the S&T Softball Field. The Screaming Eagles (24-6, 5-3 GLVC) took the opener 7-1.

S&T (12-17, 4-4 GLVC) struck first in game two with a run in the second inning. Hannah Franceschini (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) led off the inning with a single and advanced to third after a pair of groundouts. Jacey Allen (Roanoke, Texas/Byron Nelson) came through with a two-out single up the middle scoring Franceschini. The Lady Miners nearly had a second run but Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) couldn't beat a force play at second which ended the inning.

Southern Indiana stormed back scoring three times on four hits in the third inning. Marleah Fossett had the big blow in the inning with a two-run double to left center. Haley Hodges followed with a double to center to score Fossett. Hodges then tried to score on Mena Fulton's single to center but was thrown out at the plate by Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette ).

The Lady Miners tied the game in its half of the third on an RBI single with the bases loaded from Franceschini and a wild pitch brought home Carley Hamann (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way North) with the tying run. S&T left two in scoring position in the inning on a groundout and a strikeout.

The Screaming Eagles retook the lead in the top of the fifth on a solo home run off the bat of Fossett but the Lady Miners responded in the home half of the frame on a solo home run from Savannah Fedorchak (Oakville, Mo./Oakville).

S&T had a chance to retake the lead in the sixth but Hamann but was robbed of a hit by Fulton at third on a diving stop.

USI had a chance to regain the lead in the seventh getting back-to-back two-out singles from Fossett and Hodges but Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) got Fulton to popup too short to end the threat. The Screaming Eagles had another chance in the eighth putting the go-ahead run at third with two outs but Viets struck out Olivia Clark-Kittleson looking to escape the jam.

Allen was robbed of a double on great diving catch by Clark-Kittleson leading off the eighth but Klein followed with a double to right center. USI brought in its ace, Jennifer Leonhardt, to try and send the game to the ninth. Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette ) fell behind in the count 0-2 then lined a single into right. Grace Clark charged hard anticipating a play at the plate but the ball got past her. Klein was initially held at third but came into score on the error with the winning run.

The Lady Miners outhit the Screaming Eagles 13-10 in the nightcap. Fedorchak and Franceschini led the way with three hits each while Klein and Weiss added two hits apiece. Allen, Kelly Heckemeyer (St. Elizabeth, Mo./St. Elizabeth) and Lori Badalamenti (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland ) had a hit each. Viets picked up the win allowing four runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts in eight inning pitched to improve to 6-8.

Southern Indiana broke on top in the third scoring four times on five hits. Fossett had the big hit in the inning hitting a single off the first base bag to drive in a pair of runs. The Screaming Eagles added to its lead with three more in the seventh. Fossett again had the big blow lining a two-run double into the left center gap.

Fedorchak got S&T on the board in the home half of the seventh driving a 3-2 pitch over the left center field fence for her fourth home run of the season.

The Lady Miners were held to just four hits in the opener. Fedorchak had two of those while Weiss and Hamann had one each. Avery English (Carterville, Ill./Carterville) fell to 6-8 allowing seven runs on 11 hits with five strikeouts in 6.2 innings pitched.

S&T continues its 10-game homestand this coming Saturday hosting the Quincy University Lady Hawks in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
