Indianapolis, Ind. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners surrendered three home runs in its doubleheader sweep against the 20
th ranked Indianapolis Greyhounds at Baumgartner Field on Sunday afternoon in Indianapolis, Ind. S&T (8-15, 0-2 GLVC) had its chances in the doubleheader rapping out 15 hits but were just 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position and left 15 runners on base in the doubleheader.
Game 1 – Indianapolis 4 Missouri S&T 2
The Lady Miners struck first in the opener on
Olivia Young (Milstadt, Ill./Belleville Township)'s groundout to second scoring
Carley Hamann (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way North) in the top of the second. S&T had a chance to add onto its lead in the third putting runners on second and third but couldn't bring them in.
UIndy (21-5, 4-0 GLVC) tied the game in the home half of the third on a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded to bring in Dani Turner. The 'Hounds took the lead in the home half of the fourth on a solo home run to center field off the bat of Julia Liceaga. They added to their lead in the fifth with a two-run homer to right from Taylor Podschweit.
The Lady Miners cut the deficit in half in the top of the sixth getting an RBI single from Hamann scoring
Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette ).
Hannah Franceschini (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) followed with a single to bring the go-ahead run to the plate but Young lined out to the pitcher to end the threat. S&T brought the go-ahead run to the plate again in the seventh but
Kelly Heckemeyer (St. Elizabeth, Mo./St. Elizabeth) grounded out to second to end the game.
The Lady Miners had eight hits in the opener and were led by Weiss, Franceschini and
Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) with two hits apiece.
Avery English (Carterville, Ill./Carterville) suffered the loss allowing four runs, three earned, on eight hits with three strikeouts and three walks in six innings pitched.
Game 2 – Indianapolis 10 Missouri S&T 0 (Five Innings)
The backend of the doubleheader was scoreless until the bottom of the third when Natalie Lalich hit a 2-1 pitch over the fence in left for a three-run homer. The Greyhounds added to their lead in the home half of the fourth scoring seven times on five hits and took advantage of two S&T errors. Jessie Noone had the big hit in the inning driving in two runs with a single to left.
The Lady Miners had seven hits in the nightcap led by Klein and Weiss with two each.
Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) took the loss allowing nine runs, eight earned, on eight hits with three strikeouts in 3.1 innings pitched.
S&T concludes its brief roadtrip with a doubleheader at Saint Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Ind., on Monday afternoon beginning at 12 p.m.
