Softball home opener pushed back to March 20, open GLVC play this weekend

Rolla, Mo. – After playing its 19 games of the season on the road the Missouri S&T Lady Miner softball squad will have to wait a little bit longer to play its first home games of the season. The Lady Miners were scheduled to play Lindenwood on Wednesday afternoon but due to the cold temperatures the games have been moved to next Monday, March 20 at 2 and 4 p.m.

With the postponement, S&T will extend its season opening road trip to 23 games heading to Indiana this weekend to open Great Lakes Valley Conference play against Saint Joseph's College and the University of Indianapolis. The Lady Miners and Pumas will square off in a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. in Rensselaer and then will head down Interstate 65 to Indianapolis to take on the Greyhounds on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m. (CDT).

S&T (7-12) looks to snap a four-game skid when it takes on Saint Joseph's on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Miners also look to begin conference play with a pair of wins for the first time since 2014.

S&T is being led offensively by Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) who is hitting .369 with four doubles and seven runs batted in this season. Kelly Heckemeyer (St. Elizabeth, Mo./St. Elizabeth) is also hitting .326 and has driven in 10 runs.

Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) leads the way in the circle going 4-5 with a 4.03 earned run average while Avery English (Carterville, Ill./Carterville) is 3-6 with a 4.01 ERA. English has struck out 44 batters while issuing just 12 walks in 57.2 innings pitched. Viets has tossed seven complete games and has a pair of shutouts.

The Pumas recently finished their Spring Break trip to Clermont, Florida going 4-4 to improve their overall record to 5-10. They will also play host to Drury on Sunday afternoon in a doubleheader.

Amanda Melzoni leads SJC at the plate and in the circle. She's hitting .429 at the dish with 11 runs scored and has driven in seven runs. In the circle she's 3-5 with a 3.04 ERA with 17 strikeouts in 46 innings pitched.

Indianapolis is currently 13-5 on the season and still has four games left on its Spring Break trip in Clermont. The Greyhounds had their six game winning streak snapped in a 3-0 loss to the Philadelphia Rams on Sunday afternoon. They'll play Saint Thomas Aquinas and Concordia-St. Paul on Tuesday afternoon and then conclude the trip against Indiana (Pa.) and California (Pa.) on Wednesday.

The 'Hounds open GLVC play on Saturday hosting Drury at 11 a.m. (CDT) before welcoming S&T on Sunday.

Dani Turner, a transfer from Southeast Missouri State, leads UIndy with a .414 batting average, has hit seven home runs and driven in 16 runs. Natalie Lalich leads the ball club with 17 RBIs.
