Lady Miners can’t contain Saints in second half

St. Louis, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners held a one-point lead at halftime but couldn't contain Maryville in the second half falling 80-67 on Saturday afternoon at Moloney Arena. Katey Brown (Craig, Neb./Guardian Angels Central Catholic) led the Lady Miners (10-15, 5-12 GLVC) with a career-high 16 points and was one of three players in double figures.

S&T trailed by as many as five points in the opening quarter and were able to stay within striking distance of the Saints (12-12, 8-9 GLVC). Brown and Jamy Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) led the Lady Miners with four points each in the opening 10 minutes.

Maryville scored the first bucket of the second period to take a 22-16 lead then S&T went on a 17-6 run over the next five minutes to build its largest lead of the game at 33-28 on a jumper by Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School). Joe'l Bland (St. Charles, Mo./Homeschooled) provided a spark off the bench in the second quarter scoring 10 of her season-high 12 points during the run.

The Saints rallied with a run of its own to regain the lead at 38-37 with 0:38 left in the half on a three-pointer from Stephanie Sherwood. The lead was short lived as Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) answered on the other end with a jumper giving the Lady Miners a 39-38 lead at the break.

The second half was the Ali Ringering show as she scored 17 of her game-high 26 points in the second 20 minutes. Maryville scored the first four points of the third quarter to retake the lead and wouldn't relinquish it. The Saints outscored S&T 24-14 in the third quarter to take a 62-53 lead into the final quarter.

The Lady Miners closed the deficit to seven early in the final frame but an 8-2 run by Maryville over the next three minutes gave it a 16-point lead and the lead wouldn't dip below double digits the rest of the contest.

After shooting 55 percent in the first half, S&T was held to just 11-of-30 shooting in the second half. The Lady Miners finished the game shooting 43 percent from the floor, they were 4-of-13 from three and 9-for-13 at the foul line. They outscored the Saints 12-8 in points off turnovers and 15-10 in second chance points.

Maryville made 16-of-29 shots from the floor in the second half and finished the game shooting 53 percent from the floor. The Saints were 10-for-18 from three and 14-of-20 at the foul line. Ringering led Maryville in scoring and was joined in double figures by Sherwood with 16 points, Alex Wolf added 13 while Mary Barton dropped home 10.

S&T closes out its season this coming Thursday hosting ninth ranked Drury at 5:30 p.m.
