Lady Miners drop regular season finale to eighth ranked Drury

Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners had its chances to upset eighth ranked Drury but ran out of steam in the final quarter as the Lady Panthers (25-3, 17-1 GLVC) pulled away for an 80-58 win at Billy Key Court on Thursday evening. Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) led three Lady Miners (10-16, 5-13 GLVC) in double figures with 15 points.

The two sides swapped baskets to begin the game and were tied at 4-4 two minutes into the game. Drury took control of the game over the next 4:30 with a 13-0 run paced by the play of Heather Harman and Hailey Diestelkamp who combined to score nine of the 13 points.

S&T responded with a 7-2 run of its own to cut the Lady Panther lead to 19-11 with 1:09 left in the opening stanza. Drury scored the final four points of the frame to take a 12-point lead into the quarter break.

The Lady Panthers extended their lead to 15 early in the second quarter but then the Lady Miners began to chip away with a 10-1 run over the next six minutes to make it 29-23 on a three-pointer by Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) with 1:39 left in the second period. Drury countered with six straight points to push the lead back to double digits but Arand hit a three with 0:34 left in the half to trim the deficit to 35-26 at the intermission.

After a slow start shooting, S&T warmed up and finished the half shooting 37 percent (11-for-30) from the field, they were 3-of-9 from three and made its only free throw attempt in the first 20 minutes. It was outrebounded 19-to-17 in the half. Katey Brown (Craig, Neb./Guardian Angels Central Catholic) led the Lady Miners with 11 points.

The Lady Panthers extended their halftime lead to 11 1:26 into the third quarter. S&T refused to go away responding with a 10-3 run over the next 3:36 to cut the lead to four after a three-pointer by Jamy Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy).

Drury snapped the run getting back-to-back three's from Lexie Vaught and Harman to push the lead back to double figures with less than three minutes left in the third quarter. The Lady Miners trimmed the lead to 54-49 with 0:31 left in the stanza on a three-pointer from Arand. Vaught gave the Lady Panthers a seven point lead heading into the final quarter hitting two free throws with 0:03 left.

Drury pushed the lead back to 13 points at the start of the fourth quarter on three's from Paige Wilson and Diestelkamp. S&T trimmed the lead to eight points a couple of times before the Lady Panthers put the game away with a 16-2 run over the final seven minutes.

The Lady Miners finished the game shooting 39.6 percent (21-for-53) from the floor, they were 7-of-18 from beyond the arc and shot 69 percent at the foul line. Arand scored eight of her 15 points in the second half while Brown finished with 14 and Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School) dropped in 11. Douvier finished with a game-high nine rebounds to lead S&T.

Drury ended the game shooting 51 percent (30-for-59) from the field, it was 9-of-21 from the three-point line and shot 73 percent at the foul line. Diestelkamp led all scorers with 19 points while Harman added 18 points, Wilson dropped in 14 and Vaught finished with 10. The Lady Panthers forced 25 turnovers in the game and had a 29-12 advantage in points off turnovers.
