St. Louis, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miner softball squad dropped a pitcher's duel against Maryville 1-0 on Saturday morning at Weber Field in St. Louis, Mo.
Avery English (Carterville, Ill./Carterville) tossed six innings allowing one run on five hits with seven strikeouts and no walks.
S&T (2-4) had a couple of chances early in the game putting runners at second and third with one out in both the third and fourth innings but were unable to capitalize. The Lady Miners grounded out to third and flew out to center to end the third inning and then in the fourth inning a foul out resulted in the second out and then
Hannah Franceschini (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) was robbed of a hit on a diving stab by Ashley Marks at third to end the inning.
The Saints (2-3) broke the scoreless tie in the home half of the sixth. Sydney Halleen led off the inning with a single up the middle and went to second on a sacrifice. Courtney Ferguson drove her in with a single to center. Ferguson then stole second but was left stranded their after back-to-back strikeouts by English.
S&T had a chance to tie the game in the seventh. After the first two were retired Franceschini singled and English walked.
Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette ) lined out to right to end the game.

S&T returns to action later on Saturday afternoon taking on the Lincoln Blue Tigers at 3 p.m.
