ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T will hit the road for the first time in Great Lakes Valley Conference play Thursday night when it heads to St. Louis to face Maryville in the first of two contests this week.
The Miners will take on the Saints in a 7:30 p.m. game at MU's Moloney Arena, then return home for a Saturday afternoon non-conference matchup against William Woods at 2 p.m. at Billy Key Court.
Missouri S&T brings a 1-5 record into Thursday's game after dropping its conference opener Saturday 82-78 to Illinois Springfield, while Maryville split its first two GLVC outings and is 4-2 on the year.
S&T held a lead into the final minute of play Saturday against UIS, thanks in large part to forward
Romain Louiserre (La Ferte Alais, France/Fredrick Fays), who scored 10 points in a 12-2 Miner spurt that gave his team the lead. Louiserre finished the game with a career-high 24 points and is among six Miners averaging in double figures heading into play this weekend.
Chris Harris (Antioch, IL/Lake Forest Academy) leads the way with an average of 15.8 points per game – good for 10
th in the GLVC – while
Sebastian Ferenc (Zgierz, Poland/) is averaging 13.4 points a game and
Ervin Sarajlic (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) is at 11.8 with a team-high 15 three-point baskets. Louiserre is averaging 11.3 points per contest and
Dulan Scott (Chicago, IL/Farragut Academy) is at 10.3 a game.
Ferenc and Sarajlic are among the top six rebounders in the GLVC, with Ferenc pulling down a team-high 9.6 a game and Sarajlic with nine a contest, while Harris leads the GLVC with 16 steals.
S&T's sixth double figure scorer is Allante Pickens, who has been sidelined with an injury since the season opener.
ABOUT MARYVILLE: The Saints enter Thursday's contest with a 4-2 overall record after splitting their first two GLVC contests over the weekend. Following a 107-86 loss to a William Jewell squad that is currently undefeated, Maryville bounced back with an 80-66 win Saturday at Rockhurst behind a 26 point performance from Forrester Sims.
Sims is among four Saints averaging in double figures for the season with his average of 15 points per game and is shooting 56.3 percent from three-point range. Nolan Berry, a transfer from Butler and UC Davis, leads Maryville in scoring at 18.5 points per contest -- the fourth-best mark in the GLVC -- and is also the Saints' top rebounder with 7.7 per game while hitting 67.6 percent of his shots from the field.
Maryville is also getting 12.5 points a game from Missouri State transfer Robin Thompson, who is also pulling down seven rebounds a contest, while Casey Teson, who previously played at Eastern Illinois, is scoring 10.5 points a game.
Teson has hit a team-high 15 three-pointers and is shooting 44.1 percent from beyond the arc, while Teehjay Bogan leads the Saints with 21 assists.
ABOUT WILLIAM WOODS: The Owls – who will be playing Saturday's game as an exhibition contest – will bring a 4-6 record into the contest but is coming off an impressive 84-69 win over Columbia College, the seventh-ranked team in the NAIA Division I ranks. They got 56 of their 84 points in the game from three of their top four scorers on the season, led by 19-point efforts from DaShaun Stark and Darrien Dickey.
Stark, who played previously in the GLVC at Drury and named Monday as the American Midwest Conference player of the week, leads the Owls with an average of 15.1 points per game and has also dished out a team-high 38 assists. Dickey is scoring 13.2 points a game while shooting 60.2 percent from the field and the Owls' third double figure scorer, Shamari Denson, is scoring just over 10 points a game in primarily a reserve role.
Stark and Brandon Vice are the top rebounders for William Woods with 7.2 per game as the Owls are pulling down nearly four more per game than their opponents. Brian Enriquez and Ray White are both shooting 47.8 percent from three-point range.
