Miners swept by Rangers on Saturday

Somers, Wis. – Missouri S&T's volleyball team dropped a straight set decision at Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday afternoon in Somers, Wis. The Miners struggled to get their offense going for a second straight match hitting just .115 in the contest. Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) led S&T with nine kills while Claire Friedlund (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) added eight.

The first set was a see-saw battle featuring 13 ties and seven lead changes. The Miners held an early lead only to see the Rangers (10-8, 6-4 GLVC) use a 7-1 run to grab a 12-8 advantage after a pair off errors from S&T. The Miners regrouped after a timeout and proceeded to go on an 8-2 run of their own to retake the lead at 16-14 on a kill from Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside) which forced Parkside to call timeout.

This time it was the Rangers who answered back scoring nine of the next 14 points to grab a 23-21 lead on a kill from Lexie Calloway. S&T bounced back tying the set at 23-23 when Combs and Caroline Dykes (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence) stuffed Leah Fenske at the net. Parkside scored on the next point though to get to set point first but gave the point right back on a service error. After a kill from Calloway gave the Rangers another set point Ellen Schulz (Wildwood, Mo./Eureka) extended the set with a kill. Parkside then closed out the set getting the final two points to take the opener 27-25.

The Rangers broke open a tight second set with a 10-5 run getting three kills from Rachel Hedman and two from Fenske. The Miners cut the deficit to six points a couple of times but were unable to get closer than that as Parkside took the second set 25-17.

S&T got down by five points to start the third stanza but were able to get back to within 10-7 after a service error. That would be the closest it got though as the Rangers countered with a 9-4 run to take its largest lead of the match at 19-11 on a kill from Katie Adams. The Miners cut the deficit to six on a kill from Ava Peterson (St. Joseph, Mo./Savannah) but Parkside scored three of the final five points to win the set 25-17 and complete the sweep.

Corinne Stulce (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) finished the match with 18 digs while Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood) had 14 assists.

Hedman finished with a match-high 10 kills while Calloway and Lexi Turek added nine kills apiece. Adams handed out 33 assists and Annie Leo had a match-high 20 digs.

S&T (5-13, 1-8 GLVC) returns to action on Tuesday hosting Lindenwood in a 6 p.m. match at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building.
