S&T drops straight sets match at Indianapolis

Indianapolis, Ind. – Missouri S&T's volleyball team fell in straight sets to the Indianapolis Greyhounds on Friday evening in Indianapolis, Ind. Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) led S&T with nine kills while Calla Meyer (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas) finished with five kills.

The Miners (5-12, 1-7 GLVC) struggled to get their offense going in the opening set as they were held to a negative .091 hitting percentage. They had no answer defensively for the trio of Rachel Irbe, Anna Fehribach and Katie Voelz who combined for 11 of the Greyhounds (10-7, 5-3 GLVC) 15 kills in the frame.

The Miners trailed 9-7 but the 'Hounds used an 8-2 run to break it open and went on to win 25-12.

The second set was tied at 5 before UIndy went on a 10-0 run to take control. S&T trimmed the deficit to 19-12 but the Greyhounds pushed the lead to 24-14 after a kill from Julia Kruzan. The Miners would score the next four points to close within 24-18 but were unable to get closer as Fehribach ended the set on the next point with a kill to give UIndy the set 25-18.

The third stanza was tied at 10 midway through but like the second frame the 'Hounds used a 9-4 run to gain separation. S&T was able to battle back within 23-19 but UIndy was able to hold off the comeback to win 25-21.

The Miners finished the contest hitting just .046 and had 24 kills in the contest. Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood) had nine assists while Corinne Stulce (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) finished with 18 digs.

Irbe and Fehribach each had 12 kills to lead the Greyhounds. Alyssa Spears handed out 20 assists and Olivia Martin had 22 digs. UIndy finished the match recording 48 kills and had a hitting percentage of .242.

S&T is back in action on Saturday afternoon traveling to Kenosha, Wis., to take on Wisconsin-Parkside at 2 p.m.
