Miners fall in straight sets to sixth ranked Lewis

Rolla, Mo. – Missouri S&T's volleyball team fell in straight sets to sixth ranked Lewis (12-25, 12-25, 16-25) on Saturday afternoon at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) led S&T with five kills while Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside), Kyley Thompson (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) and Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) had four kills each.

Lewis (22-2, 11-1 GLVC) led from start to finish in the opening set as they hit .281 in the stanza. Elizabeth Hyland and Caroline Stefanon had four kills each in the set. The Miners struggled to get their offense going hitting just .057. Ellen Schulz (Wildwood, Mo./Eureka) had two kills in the frame.

The Flyers hit even better in the second set recording 15 kills and hit .438 in the stanza. Aly Schneider, Colleen Wilhelm and Bailey Sparkman had four kills each. Thompson and Combs had two kills each for S&T in the stanza.

The Miners trailed early in set three but came back to even things at 9-9 thanks to a 5-0 run. Lewis regained the lead thanks to a 6-1 run of its own. Hyland, Sparkman and Joyce Balash had a kill each in the run. S&T trimmed the deficit to 15-12 but the Flyers answered back with a 7-2 run to push their lead to eight points. The Miners cut the lead to seven but were unable to get any closer than that.

S&T recorded only 24 kills in the contest and finished the match hitting .058 percent. Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood) had nine assists while Corinne Stulce (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) finished with 14 digs.

Lewis hit .330 percent for the match recording 44 kills in 103 chances. Hyland finished with a match-high 11 kills while Schneider and Sparkman added seven each. Abby Becker handed out 23 assists
and Ronni Katarzynski had 11 digs.

The Miners return to action on Tuesday when they travel down to Springfield to take on Drury at 7 p.m.
