Springfield, Mo. – Missouri S&T's volleyball suffered a straight sets defeat against Drury on Tuesday evening at the O'Reilly Family Events Center in Springfield, Mo.
Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) led S&T with seven kills while Calla Meyer added six.
Claire Friedlund (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) and
Ellen Schulz (Wildwood, Mo./Eureka) had five kills each.
The opening set was tied early when the Panthers (18-10, 7-8 GLVC) went on an 8-1 run to take a 12-5 lead. The Miners were able to trim the lead to 16-12 after a kill from Meyer but Drury ended the stanza scoring nine of the final 11 points to win 25-14.
S&T trailed 15-12 in the second set but used a 10-4 run to take a 22-19 lead and forced the Panthers to take a timeout. After the stoppage, Drury responded with four straight points to regain the lead on a block by Bentley Mara and Faith Alwardt. The Miners tied it again with a kill from Meyer but a service error and a kill by Mara gave the Panthers set two 25-23.
Drury dominated the third set scoring 11 of the first 13 points and wouldn't look back as it led by as many as 13 points in the final frame. S&T was unable to get closer than eight points the rest of the set.
The Miners finished the match with an attack percentage of .183 recording 32 kills against 13 errors in 104 chances.
Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside) handed out 18 assists and nine digs along with Combs.
The Panthers recorded 45 kills against 14 errors in 109 attacks to finish the match hitting .284. Mara was the lone player to reach double figures in the match finishing with 14 kills. Kendra Sater handed out 33 assists while Sarah Kite added 13 digs.
S&T (8-19, 1-13 GLVC) returns home for its final matches of the home season on Friday hosting William Jewell in a 7 p.m. match at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. The Miners will honor seniors Friedlund, White,
Lauren Flowers (Ballwin, Mo./Lafayette) and
Ashley Allegri (Leawood, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) before the start of the match.
