Box Score
RENSSELAER, Ind. – After falling behind in the opening quarter, Missouri S&T dominated play over the next two quarters to notch its first Great Lakes Valley Conference win of the season as it routed Saint Joseph's
54-21 at Alumni Stadium.
Trailing 14-7 following 15 minutes of play, the Miners rattled off 44 unanswered points to knock off the Pumas for the seventh straight year and did it with a dominant performance on both sides of the ball.
The Miners got on the scoreboard first on their opening possession, marching 50 yards and reaching the end zone when quarterback
Tyler Swart (Dickinson, TX/Dickinson) scored on a quarterback sneak from the one-yard line.
Saint Joseph's answered right back when Philip Kimble connected with Zach Bobos for a 20-yard touchdown pass, then following a pair of punts – the latter of which pinned the Miners deep in their own territory – the Pumas took the lead when Swart fumbled and Austin Fleming recovered the ball in the end zone.
But when the second quarter began, the Miners came to life.
It began when Swart, rolling from the pocket, connected with
Ray Mullen (Palm Springs, CA/Palm Springs) downfield; Mullen was able to break free and elude two Puma tacklers inside the 15-yard line to score and tie the game at 14 on a play that covered 67 yards.
On the first play after the ensuing kickoff,
Isaiah Hardy (San Jose, CA/Sobrato) picked off a Kimble pass at the Pumas' 23-yard line, setting up S&T's go-ahead score. After Swart completed a pass to Mullen to the 12,
Charles Bournes (Chicago, IL/Morgan Park) scored on the next play to give the Miners the lead.
S&T added to its lead the next time it got the ball as
Dalton Major (Bourbonnais, IL/Bishop McNamara) raced 51 yards for a touchdown to give the Miners a 27-14 lead it would take to the locker room.
Thanks in a part to a 47-yard completion to
Braxton Graham (Seneca, MO/Seneca), the Miners were able to score on their opening drive of the second half which ended with a 35-yard field goal by Ben Styron. A little over three minutes later, the Miners scored again when Mullen caught his second long touchdown pass of the day on a 43-yard strike from Swart.
Swart's second scoring pass marked the fifth straight game that he has thrown multiple touchdown passes, making him just the fifth Miner in history to reach that mark.
SJC got an eight-yard run from Issac James with a little over five minutes to play to stop the Miners' scoring run; S&T did get another field goal from Styron late in the contest to close the scoring.
The Miners finished with 423 yards of total offense and held the Pumas (2-2, 1-1 GLVC) to 281, including just 143 in the second half in which most of them came after the game was in hand.
Mullen caught seven passes for 148 yards and Major rushed for a season-high 101 for S&T, while Swart completed 15-of-25 passes for 240 yards and the two scores.
Landon Compton (Lamar, MO/Lamar) led the Miners defense with 10 tackles; the Miners as a team recorded 10 tackles for a loss on the afternoon and sacked Kimble three times.
The Miners (2-2, 1-1 GLVC) return home next Saturday to host William Jewell on Hall of Fame Night at Allgood-Bailey Stadium. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
