ROLLA, Mo. – Two of the teams tied for the top spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference's West Division face off this weekend at the S&T Ballpark, as Missouri S&T continues its 10-game homestand by hosting Rockhurst in a four-game series.
Due to the possibility of inclement weather on Sunday, the Miners and Hawks will play the four-game set on Friday and Saturday with noon start times for the doubleheaders slated for each day.
The Miners split a four-game series at eighth-ranked Quincy last weekend, then rallied from a seven-run deficit Wednesday to top 20
th-ranked Missouri Southern 12-11 and will bring a 19-9 overall record and 5-3 conference mark into the series. Rockhurst is also 5-3 in the GLVC following a four-game sweep over Maryville last week and is 14-15 overall.
S&T and Rockhurst are tied with William Jewell – who plays four at Drury this weekend -- at the top of the GLVC West with their 5-3 league marks.
Eli Miller (Shelbyville, Ill./Shelbyville), who drove in the tying run in the eighth and was at the plate when the winning run scored on a wild pitch Wednesday, leads the Miners in hitting with a .404 average that ranks eighth in the GLVC.
Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) comes into the weekend with a .380 batting average and leads S&T with five home runs and 33 runs batted in; the latter mark is the fourth-highest mark in the league.
Collin Zurweller (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) enters the series with a .373 batting mark, while
Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman), who is tied for the conference lead in triples with four, owns a .340 average.
Missouri S&T is fourth in the GLVC in hitting with a .315 team batting average and owns a team earned run average of 4.42. The pitching staff is headed by
Aaron Bedsworth (New Bloomfield, Mo./New Bloomfield), who has a 5-2 record and 3.25 earned run average, while
Dan Borek (Greenville, Wis./Hortonville) also has five wins on the hill and a 4.54 ERA and
Keith Coulson (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) has a 4.58 ERA to go with his 4-2 mark.
Rockhurst is hitting .299 as a team and is tied for third in the conference with 37 stolen bases. The Hawks' pitching staff has recorded a 6.19 earned run average.
Brandon Mikulka is hitting .344 for the Hawks with 19 runs batted in, while David Stober is hitting .343 and Brett Marr is at .330 with 10 stolen bases, tied for fourth in the league. Mitch Stickney has driven in a team-high 23 runs, while Seth Soto has knocked in 21.
Henry Weiler has a 5-1 record on the mound with a 2.68 earned run average and Michael Lydon-Lorson, who leads the GLVC in innings pitched at 48 1/3, has a 4.84 ERA and has won three of his six decisions. Lydon-Lorson, who threw an eight-inning shutout at the Miners on the final weekend of the 2015 season, also leads the Hawk staff with 21 strikeouts.
