Miners fall to Tritons in four sets

Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Miners dropped its third straight match falling 3-1 to Missouri-St. Louis on Friday evening at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. The Miners (10-19, 5-12 GLVC) struggled to get their offense going hitting just .159 for the match and couldn't contain the Triton (17-11, 11-6 GLVC) attack in the contest.

S&T started the match strong racing out to an early 6-2 lead forcing UMSL to take an early timeout. Out of the timeout, the Tritons responded with a 6-2 run of its own to square the frame up. The Miners held leads of 10-8 and 12-10 but were unable to pull away as UMSL went on a 7-3 run to grab a two-point lead late. S&T battled back to tie it at 17 on a kill from Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic), but the Tritons countered with four straight taking a 21-17 advantage. Claire Friedlund (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) sparked the Miner attack with back-to-back kills and a double block from Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside) and Carson Talley (St. Louis, Mo./Affton) brought S&T within 21-20 and forced another Triton timeout. UMSL finished the set scoring four of the final six points to take the opener 25-22.

The second set saw six ties and two lead changes before the Tritons were able to pull away down the stretch ending the frame on a 10-5 run to win 25-19 and take the 2-0 lead into the intermission. Kyley Thompson (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) accounted for six kills for S&T in the frame but it wouldn't be enough as UMSL hit 31.6 percent in the stanza.

S&T trailed by as many as six in the third set before starting to chip away at the lead eventually tying the frame on a kill from Thompson. The two sides swapped the next six points to remain tied at 21-21 when the Miners got a break as Lexi Rogers committed a service error to give S&T the lead and then White added a kill forcing the Tritons to take a timeout trailing 23-21. UMSL got back to within 24-23 before Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) ended the set giving the Miners a 25-23 win to extend the match.

S&T built a six point lead early in set four but were unable to maintain the lead as the Tritons used a 13-6 run to come back and take an 18-17 lead after back-to-back kills from Serena Nolte. The Miners hung around and were tied at 21 after a double block from Marketa Illetskova (Klatovy Czech Republic/Gymnazium Jaroslave, Vrchlickeho Klatovy) and Schlader. However, UMSL closed out the match scoring the final four points to win the set 25-21.
