Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Miners dropped the opening set then rallied to win the next three to defeat the Maryville Saints 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building.
Shelby Wagner (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit) recorded a career-high 18 kills in the contest as the Miners (11-19, 6-12 GLVC) totaled 62 kills as a team in the win.
S&T started the match sluggishly falling behind early and were never able to overcome the early deficit as Maryville (4-27, 2-16 GLVC) took advantage of nine attack errors from the Miners to win the opener 25-21.
S&T used a 13-4 run midway through the second set to bust open a tight contest and would go onto win 25-16 and even the match at a set apiece heading into the intermission.. The Miners hit .273 in the stanza while holding the Saints to .029 hitting percentage and forced them into nine attack errors.
Claire Friedlund (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) led S&T with four kills in the stanza while Wagner,
Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside),
Claire Luther (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) and
Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) had two kills each.
The Miners fell behind early in set three before going on a 12-3 run to take control of the set. Wagner and Combs combined for six kills in that run while Friedlund and
Caitlin Brocker (Crystal Lake, Ill./Marian Central ) each had a service ace. Maryville got as close as four points but S&T was able to pull away down the stretch to take the stanza 25-17.
The Miners fell behind again early in the fourth set but were able to overcome the slow start eventually taking the lead after three straight kills from Friedlund. The Saints continued to hang around before the Miners pulled away late with a 5-1 run to take command. Maryville cut the deficit to five but an attack error by Allison Lakin ended the contest giving S&T the 25-19 victory.
The Miners had three players finish in double figures led by Wagner's performance. Combs added 16 kills and Friedlund finished with 13. White dished out 49 assists while Friedlund had 13 digs. S&T finished the match with a hitting percentage of .259.
Lakin led the Saints with 17 kills and was joined in double figures by Ashley Selman with 10 kills. Kayla Buxton and Michelle Escue each had 18 assists while Makayla Campbell had a match-high 16 digs. As a team, Maryville was held to a .149 hitting percentage.
