Rolla, Mo. - The Missouri S&T Miner volleyball squad broke a three-match losing streak with a
3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-19) win over Saint Joseph's on Friday night in its 2015 home opener. S&T took the opening round of the weekend series against the Pumas as the two schools will face off on the gridiron on Saturday evening in Rolla.
The Miners (7-5, 1-2 GLVC) scored five of the first six points of the match and didn't let the Pumas (4-5, 0-3 GLVC) get closer than two points the rest of the frame. S&T used an 8-3 run midway through the opening set and then put it away by scoring nine of the final 11 points.
Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) and
Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) led the charge with four kills each in the opening set while
Claire Friedlund (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) had three more.
The Miners hit .400 in the opening frame while holding SJC to a .000 hitting percentage.
S&T charged out of the gates in the second stanza scoring eight of the first 10 points and wouldn't look back as it led by as many as 13 points in the frame. The Miner defense had three blocks in the set while holding the Puma offense to a negative .062 hitting percentage.
Combs once again paced the offense with four kills while
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) chipped in with four and Moon had three.
The third stanza was the closest of the three with 10 ties and eight lead changes along the way as both sides answered each other's runs. With the frame tied at 12 the Miners gained some separation scoring five of the next seven points to build a three-point lead.
Saint Joseph's cut the lead to 19-17 on a kill from Megan Sturm but that would be the closest it got as S&T rattled off the next five points to get to match point up by seven. The Pumas staved off two match points but not a third as a service error by Nora Mitros ended the match.
The Miners finished the match with 41 kills against 17 errors in 87 chances to finish with a hitting percentage of .276. Combs was the lone player in double figures registering 11 kills while Friedlund and Moon had seven kills each.
Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside) finished with 34 assists and
Jackie Pyles (White Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) had 14 digs.
Saint Joseph's finished the match with .000 attack percentage (22k/22e/99ta). Lauren Robertson led the Pumas with seven kills off the bench while Kate Wagenaar had four. Sturm had nine assists and Bridget Krasowski had seven digs.
S&T continues its seven match homestand on Saturday when it hosts Indianapolis in a 3 p.m. match at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. The Greyhounds were swept at Drury on Friday night.
