Romeoville, Ill. – Missouri S&T rallied twice from a set down but couldn't complete the comeback dropping a hard fought five set match at Lewis
3-2 (22-25, 27-25, 18-25, 25-18, 12-15) on Saturday afternoon in Romeoville, Ill. The match saw 28 ties and six lead changes.
Lewis (10-1, 2-0 GLVC) started the match fast racing out to an early five point lead and were able to keep the Miners (6-5, 0-2 GLVC) at arm's length for a majority of the stanza. S&T mounted a rally eventually tying the set at 19-19 after an attack error by Elizabeth Hyland. The Flyers countered scoring four of the next five points to push its lead to three and were able to hold off the Miners to take the opener 25-22.
Lewis began the second set like it began the first one racing out to an early five point lead. S&T was able to come back and square the set at 16 on a kill from
Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic). The set would continue to go back-and-forth until late in the set. With the set tied at 25 the Miners scored the final two points on an error from Hyland and a kill by
Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside) to level the match at 1-1.
The third set belonged to the Flyers as they raced out to an early lead and wouldn't look back on their way to the 25-18 set win. They registered 17 kills in the set while hitting nearly 40 percent. Hyland, Alexis Davito and Maddie Seliga accounted for 14 of the team's 17 kills in the frame.
In the fourth set, S&T held a four point lead early before Lewis countered with four straight to even the frame at 11. The Miners responded with a 7-1 run to build a six point lead and would carry that momentum the rest of the way cruising to the 25-18 win and force the fifth and deciding set.
The finale went back-and-forth the entire way with the two sides trading points over the first 10 swings of the stanza. S&T took a 7-5 lead on a kill from White and a service ace from
Cydney Denning (San Antonio, Texas/Brandeis ), but the Flyers got kills from Cassidy Parsons and Aly Schneider to level it at 7.
The Miners scored three of the next four points to become the first team to 10 points after a kill from Combs. Lewis countered with four straight points to take a 12-10 lead and forced S&T to take a timeout. After the break back-to-back errors by the Flyers tied it at 12 and forced Lewis to take a timeout.
The Miners couldn't maintain the momentum as Hyland and Morgan Cebula recorded back-to-back kills to get Lewis to match point. After another timeout by S&T,
Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) tried to extend the match but couldn't as an error ended the match.
The Miners finished the match with 57 kills against 26 errors in 180 attacks to finish with a hitting percentage of .172.
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) led S&T with 15 kills while Combs added 11 more. White dished out 30 assists and
Jackie Pyles (White Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) finished with a career-high 33 digs.
The Flyers registered 65 kills against 25 errors in 189 chances finishing with an attack percentage of .212. Hyland and Davito led five players in double figures with 12 kills each. Parsons, Schneider and Seliga added 11 kills apiece. McKenna Pierson distributed 32 assists and Nicole Yuede had 28 digs.
S&T opens the home portion of its 2015 schedule this coming Friday against Saint Jospeh's beginning at 7 p.m.
