Miners drop GLVC opener in four sets at Wisconsin-Parkside

Somers, Wis. – The Missouri S&T Miner volleyball team dropped its Great Lakes Valley Conference opener at Wisconsin-Parkside 3-1 (20-25, 23-25, 25-18, 12-25) on Friday evening in Somers, Wis. Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) led S&T (6-4, 0-1 GLVC) with 16 kills while Claire Friedlund (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) finished with 12 kills.

The Miners raced out to an early lead to begin the match scoring the first three points before the Rangers (6-3, 1-0 GLVC) responded with an 11-5 run to take the lead. S&T came back to tie it at 11 on a block by Haslag. After that the two sides traded the next 12 points and were still deadlocked at 17 after another block from Haslag.

UW-Parkside used an 8-3 run from that point to take control and win the opening set. Jackie Langer had four kills in the run for the Rangers while the Miners committed three errors.

In the second stanza the Miners led for the first half but were unable to build on a three-point lead as Parkside came back to take a 23-19 lead after an attack error by Friedlund. The Rangers held a 24-20 advantage when S&T tried to make a late rally staving off three set points but couldn't stave off a fourth as a service error gave Parkside the set and the 2-0 lead.

The third set was tied at nine when the Miners scored six of the next seven points to take a 15-10 lead. The Rangers cut the deficit to two before S&T began to pull away with a 9-4 run to get to set point on a kill from Friedlund. After a kill from Langer, Friedlund ended the set with her sixth kill of the frame to cut the Parkside lead to 2-1.

The fourth set was all Rangers as they raced out to a 7-1 lead and wouldn't look back as they led by as many as 13 in the frame. Parkside hit 51.5 percent (17 kills/0 errors/33 total attacks) in the stanza. Langer and Rebecca Roembke combined for 12 of the team's 17 kills. The Miners hit only .098 percent in the frame.

S&T finished the match with 48 kills and had an attack percentage of .195 percent. Haslag and Friedlund paced the offense while Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) added eight kills. Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside) dished out 26 assists and Jackie Pyles (White Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) dug up 28 attacks.

Roembke led Parkside with 25 kills while Langer added 17 as the Rangers finished the match with 61 kills against 18 errors in 164 chances. Lauren Hickson distributed 51 assists and Meghan Conley had 22 digs.
