Lady Miners blanked by Flyers

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners offense was held in check on Sunday dropping both games at Lewis by scores of 7-0 and 4-0. S&T managed just six hits in the doubleheader.

The opener was scoreless until the bottom of the third. Brittany Russell led of the frame with a single through the left side, went to second on a wild pitch, third on an error and scored on Carolyn Nojiri's single. Lewis (23-20, 13-13 GLVC) would eventually load the bases  with no one out but Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) was able to get a double play and a groundout to short escaping with just the one run allowed.

The Flyers added to their lead in the fourth loading the bases with one out and getting a groundout to first to extend the lead to 2-0. Strope again was able to get out of further damage getting Nojiri to groundout to second.

Lewis busted the game open in the fifth scoring four runs on four hits and took advantage of three Lady Miner (9-28, 6-22 GLVC) miscues. The Flyers added its final tally in the sixth inning on a home run by Carly Jaworski.

S&T managed just three hits in the opener with Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield), Olivia Culbertson (Nevada, Mo./Nevada) and Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) accounting for the offense. Strope suffered the loss allowing six runs, four earned, on 10 hits with two strikeouts and a walk in 4.1 innings pitched. Bethany Rader (Memphis, Mo./Scotland County ) went the final 1.2 innings allowing a run on two hits and a walk.

In the second game, Lewis used a two-out rally in the first inning to get on the board. Jaworski started it with a double to right center and Kelsey Ullrich walked. Frankie Castagna cleared the bases with a three-run homer to left center.

The Lady Miners threatened in the second getting a one out walk and a two out single to bring the tying run to the plate, but a pop out ended the threat. The Flyers extended their lead in the third on a home run from Nojiri to make it 4-0.

Kelly Heckemeyer (St. Elizabeth, Mo./St. Elizabeth) had two hits to lead S&T in the nightcap while Miranda Thompson (Ballwin, Mo./Marquette) added the third. Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) took the loss allowing four runs on five hits with four strikeouts and a walk in six innings pitched.

The Lady Miners conclude their 2015 season with a doubleheader at Wisconsin-Parkside at 11 a.m.
