Lady Miners pound out 22 hits in doubleheader sweep of McKendree

ROLLA, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners pounded out 22 hits in its sweep over McKendree on Friday afternoon at the S&T Softball Field. S&T took the opener 4-3 and then rallied from a three-run deficit to take the nightcap 9-6. Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) paced the attack with five hits while Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) had four and Miranda Thompson (Ballwin, Mo./Marquette) finished with three.

The Lady Miners (8-25, 5-19 GLVC) scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first. With one out Michaelis reached on a bunt single then stole second after a lineout. She advanced to third on an infield single by Savannah Fedorchak (Oakville, Mo./Oakville) and scored on Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette )'s single back up the middle. Thompson then singled to left loading the bases, the rally ended on a flyout to right.

S&T added to its lead in the third. With two outs Fedorchak singled up the middle and Weiss was hit by a pitch. Thompson then doubled on a 0-2 pitch over the center fielder's head to score both runners and make it 3-0.

McKendree got back into the game in the fourth with a pair of runs on a two-run double off the bat of Dani Schoenbacher to make it 3-2. The Bearcats tied the game in the fifth on a throwing error by Davis which scored Caty Ponce.

The Lady Miners bounced back in the home half of the fifth to regain the lead. With one out Weiss singled on a slow roller up the first base line and scored on Thompson's second double of the game.

McKendree threatened in the sixth loading the bases with two outs, but Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) came in and got Ponce to line out to right to end the threat. Viets then allowed a one out single in the seventh but left the runner stranded to pick up her second save of the season.

Thompson led S&T with three hits in the opener while Michaelis, Fedorchak and Weiss added two apiece. Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) picked up the win allowing three runs, two earned, on 10 hits with three strikeouts against a walk in 5.1 innings to improve to 5-6. Viets went the final 1.2 innings allowing a hit and a walk.

The nightcap didn't start well for the Lady Miners as they fell behind 3-0 five batters into the game. They would battle back though as Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) had a RBI single and Heckemeyer hit a two-run double to center to give S&T the lead at 4-3.

The Bearcats tied the game in the second on a two out solo home run down the left field line off the bat of Ponce. The Lady Miners though regained the lead in the bottom of the second. With two outs Michaelis doubled to left center and went to third on Slemp's single to short. The shortstop's throw was off target which allowed Michaelis to score the go-ahead run.

S&T added to its lead in the home half of the third with three runs after the first two hitters were retired. Heckemeyer, Morgan Imhoff (Jamestown, Mo./Jamestown) and Ashley Rausch (Washington, Iowa/Washington) all walked to load the bases. Davis brought in two runs with a single to right center and then Michaelis drove in Victoria Culbertson (Nevada, Mo./Nevada), running for Rausch, to make it 8-4.

McKendree cut the deficit to 8-6 on a bloop double down the left field line off the bat of Schoenbacher scoring Erica Johnson and Kelsie Stoszkus. Viets was able to get out of the jam by striking out Rebecca Franke looking.

The Lady Miners added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame as Olivia Culbertson (Nevada, Mo./Nevada) led off the inning with a hit by pitch. With one out Davis singled to put runners on first and second then Michaelis flew out to right center advancing Culbertson to third. With two outs S&T pulled off a double steal as Davis stole second and Culbertson stole home on the throw through to make it 9-6.

Viets allowed a lead-off single in the sixth, but that was it as she retired the final five batters she faced to earn her third win of the season. She went the distance allowing six runs, five earned, on 10 hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

The top three in the Lady Miner order did most of the damage in the nightcap going 8-for-12 with four runs scored and four runs batted in. Davis and Michaelis had three hits each while Slemp added two.

S&T returns to action on Saturday afternoon when it hosts Illinois Springfield in its final home doubleheader of the season starting at 12 p.m. Saturday's game will be the Lady Miner's pink game with the players wearing pink jerseys. S&T will also honor its senior class at the conclusion of the doubleheader.
