Miners drop pair to Hawks to close weekend set

ROLLA, Mo. – A tough afternoon of baseball for Missouri S&T ended with a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference losses, as the Miners dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Quincy University by scores of 7-1 and 7-2 at the S&T Baseball Field.

The Hawks grabbed control of matters in the early innings of both games, using three-run third innings on each occasion to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish to take three of four from the Miners in the weekend series.

Quincy scored in the opening inning on David Jacob's RBI single, but the Miners tied things up in the bottom half when Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) reached on a wild pitch following a strikeout and later scored on a double into the gap by Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central).

After S&T starter Micah Dohlen (Kent, Wash./Kent Lake) struck out the side in the second around a two-out hit, the Hawks got to him in the third.  Brynn Martinez led off with a hit, ended up at third following a stolen base and a wild pitch and then scored on Kory Wisdom's hit; a fielding error on the play allowed Wisdom to reach second.

Wisdom would score on a hit by Ryan Snyder, then Zach Knese singled home the third run of the frame with two outs to give Quincy a 4-1 lead.

Once the Hawks got that three-run lead, Quincy starter Tommy Hager shut the door on any Miner scoring threats that followed.  S&T had runners in scoring position in the third, fourth and sixth innings with less than two outs, but Hager pitched his way out of trouble on each of those occasions.

The Hawks added three more runs in the sixth off a trio of Miner relievers.

Quincy outhit S&T 10-5 in the first game, as no Miner had more than one hit.  Dohlen, who took the loss on the hill, struck out four in his three innings of work.

In game two – one in which the winner would gain a share of first place with William Jewell in the GLVC West as the Cardinals had already lost at Missouri-St. Louis prior to the first pitch of the S&T-QU nightcap – the Hawks would again take the initial lead and add three runs to it in the third.

Chris Ward's sacrifice fly brought home an unearned run in the second to put Quincy in front, then three straight hits off Miner starter Keith Coulson (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) to begin the third sparked that outburst.

Jacob's triple to the fence in right center scored Wisdsom with the first run, then Snyder doubled down the line in right to bring home Jacob to make it 3-0.  With two outs, a dropped fly ball that would have ended the inning allowed the third run to score.

Quincy scored two more in the fourth before S&T got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning, when Adam Richter (Breese, Ill./Mater Dei) singled and came in to score when Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, Mo./Lutheran-St. Charles) tripled into the left field corner.

The Hawks scored their final run in the seventh, then the Miners got a run home with two outs in the ninth when Bodenstab singled and scored on a double by Tyler Johnson (Union, Mo./Union).

Karbowski had three of the Miners' 10 hits in game two and Swindle had two, but S&T was outhit 15-10 in the game by the Hawks (21-12, 15-7 GLVC).

The Miners dropped to 19-14 overall and 14-8 in GLVC play and will return to action Tuesday with a doubleheader against Drury in Springfield, Mo.  The first game of the twinbill at Meador Park begins at 3 p.m.
