SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Missouri S&T secured its first win over Drury at Meador Park since 2011 by winning the first game of Tuesday's Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader over the Panthers, but dropped the second game to leave town with a split of the twinbill.
S&T won the opener
11-6 before falling
6-0 in the second contest.
The Miners took advantage of some sloppy defensive play by the Panthers in the opening inning of game one, as the Panthers committed three errors in a four-run frame.
Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) reached on an error to start the inning and
Tyler Johnson (Union, Mo./Union) was hit by a pitch, followed by a one-out walk to
Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe) to load the bases. With two outs,
Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) singled to left to score Bodenstab and Johnson, then as the ball got past the left fielder, Portwood came around with the third run of the inning.
The next hitter,
Brandon Farley (Vancouver, Wash./Heritage), hit a ball that the second baseman couldn't handle, allowing Ulrich to score.
S&T added two more runs in the second on an RBI double by Johnson and a run-scoring single by Portwood, then made it 7-0 in the third when Farley doubled and scored on a hit by
Adam Richter (Breese, Ill./Mater Dei).
Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage), getting his first start of the season, blanked the Panthers into the sixth inning before the Panthers scored with two outs on a walk to Tyler Green with the bases loaded, but
Devin Muir (Roseburg, Ore./Days Creek) took over and retired Mike Rafter on a fly ball to center to end the inning.
The Miners tacked on four more runs in the seventh, as Ulrich, Richter and
Collin Zurweller (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) all drove in runs. Drury scored five in the bottom of the seventh before
Jordan Farley (Vancouver, Wash./Heritage) put out the fire.
S&T got three hits and three RBI from Ulrich as well as three hits from Richter as it outhit the Panthers 14-11 in the contest.
In game two, the Miners missed a chance to get on the board in the first inning after getting two runners on base with one out, then Drury got two in the bottom half on a fielder's choice off the bat of Connor Wilson and an RBI double by Tyler Arthur.
The Panthers would score single runs in the third and sixth inning to add to their lead for starter Austin Simms, who held the Miners scoreless on six hits over seven plus innings. After S&T got its first two runners on in the eighth, Nick Costantino entered the game and got the Panthers out of the inning before Drury tacked on two more in the bottom of the eighth.
Drury outhit S&T 13-6 in the nightcap as
Blake Stephens (Chillicothe, Mo./Chillicothe) took the loss on the hill for the Miners.
S&T, 20-15 overall, finished the night in the same spot in the GLVC standings as it started – in third place – as it is now two games in back of William Jewell and one behind Quincy at 15-9 in league play. The Miners are one game ahead of Missouri-St. Louis and Truman State in the standings heading into a four-game series at Truman State, starting Saturday with a noon doubleheader in Kirksville, Mo.
