Lady Miners upset bid comes up short against 17th ranked Southern Indiana

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners chance to upset 17th ranked Southern Indiana came up a bit short dropping the opener 6-4 and then dropped the backend of the doubleheader 8-1 on Sunday at Thompson Field at Meador Park in Springfield. Freshmen Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette ) and Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) paced the offense combining for six of the team's 12 hits in the doubleheader.

Game 1 Southern Indiana 6 Missouri S&T 4
In the opener, the Screaming Eagles (19-3, 6-2 GLVC) struck first with a run in the second inning. Brooke Harmening led off with a double to left, advanced to third on a sacrifice and scored on an error. S&T (1-12, 0-8 GLVC) answered back in the bottom half. Morgan Imhoff (Jamestown, Mo./Jamestown) singled through the left side of the infield to start the frame and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield). After a strikeout, Lori Badalamenti (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland ) delivered a two out hit down the left field line scoring Imhoff to tie the game.

The Lady Miners took the lead in the bottom of the third. Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) led off with a double down the left field line and stole third when Haley Hodges tried to throw behind her at second on an attempted pick-off. Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) walked to put runners on the corner with no one out. S&T then pulled off a double steal as Slemp got in a rundown between first and second and stayed it in long enough for Michaelis to score and for her to take second. After a strikeout, Weiss drove a ball to deep center off the tip of the center fielder's glove for a double to make it 3-1. She would be left stranded though as a strike out and a fly out ended the inning.

USI got a run back in the fourth inning as its first three hitters reached and Harmening eventually came around to score on a single by Lexi Reese. Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) was able to get out of the inning allowing just the one run with a strikeout and back-to-back groundouts.

The Screaming Eagles regained the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth off of Viets who replaced Strope. Hodges tied the game with a single through the left side and then Harmening drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to right.

The Lady Miners tied the game in the home half of the fifth on a two-out home run from Weiss down the left field line on a 0-1 pitch.

USI loaded the bases with one out in the sixth and eventually scored the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice off the bat of Grace Clark.

S&T had a chance to tie and possibly take the lead in the home half of the sixth. With two outs Badalamenti started a rally with a single to center and then Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) singled down the left field line. Michaelis then got under a pitch and flew out to right to end the inning.

Harmening added to the Eagle led with a led off home run down the left field line to start the seventh. Harmening then came onto pitch the bottom of the seventh to pick up her third save of the season.

The Lady Miners had seven hits in the opener led by Weiss and Badalamenti with two apiece. Strope got the start allowing two runs on five hits in four innings with a walk and a strikeout. Viets went the final three innings allowing four runs on seven hits with a strikeout.

Game 2 Southern Indiana 8 Missouri S&T 1
In the second game, USI jumped all over Viets to start the game as MacKenzi Dorsam led off with a home run and would score twice more to grab an early 3-0 lead. S&T got a run back in the second as Viets led off with a single off the right field fence. Weiss followed with an infield single as Dorsam was late covering the bag and Sadie Foster's throw to first was off target allowing Viets to go to third. After a groundout, Baker put the Lady Miners on the board with an RBI groundout to short.

The Screaming Eagles got that run back in the third then added two more in the fifth and sixth innings to stretch the lead to 8-1. Harmening kept the S&T offense in check limiting them to five hits in the contest with three of those belonging to Viets.

Viets suffered the loss in game two allowing three runs, two earned, on two hits. Bethany Rader (Memphis, Mo./Scotland County ) allowed a run on three hits in two innings of work, Imhoff allowed four runs on six hits in 3.1 innings while Ashley Rausch (Washington, Iowa/Washington) held USI scoreless on three hits.

The Lady Miners are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Jefferson City to take on the Lincoln Blue Tigers in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
