INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Missouri S&T saw its four-game winning streak come to a halt Saturday afternoon as it dropped both ends of its Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at the University of Indianapolis.
The Greyhounds, powered by Sean McCracken's two home runs in the first game, won that contest
10-6 and then came out on top in a
1-0 pitcher's duel to complete the sweep.
S&T took the initial lead in the opener with a run in the third inning, which began with a leadoff single by
Adam Richter (Breese, Ill./Mater Dei). Following a passed ball and a bunt that advanced him to third, Richter scored on an infield out off the bat of
Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage).
However, the Greyhounds tied the score in the bottom half of the inning on a two-out RBI single by Brady Thomas, which was then followed by the first of McCracken's two home runs, a three-run shot that gave UIndy a 4-1 lead.
The Miners tallied three in the fifth to knot the score, a rally that again started with a leadoff hit by Richter.
Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, Mo./Lutheran-St. Charles) followed with a hit and
Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) bunted his way on to load the bases. Brown's sacrifice fly brought home the first run, then following a walk to
Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central) to re-load the bases,
Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe) singled to the opposite field to cut the lead to 4-3.
Tyler Johnson (Union, Mo./Union) followed by reaching on an error that tied the contest before a double play ended the inning.
Thomas delivered another two-out RBI single in the bottom half of the fifth to put the Greyhounds back in front, then UIndy broke the game open with two in the sixth and three in the seventh, which included McCracken's second homer.
S&T did score twice in the ninth, one an RBI hit by Portwood and the other on a double play ball after the Miners loaded the bases with nobody out.
The Miners outhit the Greyhounds 13-10 in the first game, getting three hits apiece from Portwood and Richter in the contest. Starting pitcher
Mack Preston (Shawnee, Kan./Shawnee Mission Northwest), who threw the first five innings, was tagged with the loss.
Game two turned into a duel between S&T's
Aaron Bedsworth (New Bloomfield, Mo./New Bloomfield) and UIndy's Jordan Tackett, as the two combined to allow just five hits during their time on the mound. The Miners had only one hit off Tackett in 5 2/3 innings, a single in the fourth by Johnson.
S&T did get two runners on base in the second as the result of a walk and an error, but Tackett pitched out of the inning with a strikeout and a fly ball.
UIndy got the only run of the contest in the third on a sacrifice fly by Colin Hawk that scored Daniel Lee, who led off the inning with a double.
The Miners created a two-out scoring opportunity in the sixth, as Karbowski was hit by a pitch and Portwood walked to force UIndy to go to its bullpen. Johnson reached on an infield single off Brett Collins to load the bases, but
Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) lined out to left to end the inning.
S&T got the tying run on base in the seventh when Richter led off with a hit, but could only get as far as second as Collins retired the side following the hit.
Johnson had two of the Miners' three hits in the game.
Bedsworth allowed just four hits and struck out three in his six innings of work.
The Miners (8-9, 3-3 GLVC) and Greyhounds (6-8, 4-2 GLVC) will wrap up their weekend series with a doubleheader Sunday starting at noon Eastern time.
