INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Missouri S&T took the first game of Sunday's doubleheader with a come-from-behind
3-2 win over Indianapolis, but the Greyhounds took the nightcap to gain a split in a
10-3 triumph.
S&T was able to escape a pair of bases-loaded jams after taking the lead in the fifth inning of game one, then got a perfect inning of relief from
Tyler Johnson (Union, Mo./Union) to preserve the victory.
The Miners grabbed the initial lead in the opening inning of game one, as
Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) singled, moved to second on a bunt single by
Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage), then to third on a sacrifice bunt.
Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe)'s groundout brought Bodenstab home.
UIndy scored twice in the second on a two-run single by Luke Andrade to take the lead, but was then held in check by Miner starter
Micah Dohlen (Kent, Wash./Kent Lake) until S&T came to bat in the fifth.
Bodenstab again got things started with a leadoff hit on the first pitch and was sacrificed to second by Brown. With two outs, Portwood doubled to the opposite field to score Bodenstab with the tying run. Following a wild pitch that moved Portwood ahead to third, Johnson singled between third and short to put the Miners in front.
The Greyhounds loaded the bases with one out in the fifth, but Dohlen got Colin Hawk to hit into an inning-ending double play to maintain the Miner advantage. In the sixth, UIndy loaded the bases again against S&T reliever
Josh Havig (Dallas, Ore./Dallas), but he got Andrade to hit into a fielder's choice to end that threat.
Johnson took over in the seventh and retired the Greyhounds in order to record the save.
The Miners, who got two hits from Bodenstab, outhit UIndy 6-4. Dohlen walked four but allowed only two hits over the first five innings to improve to 2-2 on the season.
Game two also began with the Miners taking the initial lead, scoring in the second on a walk to Johnson, a hit by
Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) that sent Johnson to third and a ground out by
Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, Mo./Lutheran-St. Charles) to score the run. UIndy got the run back in the bottom of the inning on a run-scoring hit off the bat of Bryce Aldridge.
The Greyhounds took the lead with a three-run third, which began with a leadoff walk to Hawk. An error on a sacrifice bunt attempt led to back-to-back RBI singles by Brady Thomas and Sean McCracken, then later in the frame, McCracken scored UIndy's third run of the inning on another Miner error.
S&T got a run in the fourth when
Tyler Schutt (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch) doubled home Ulrich – who had reached on an error to start the inning – then drew to within one an inning later on an RBI groundout by Johnson that scored
Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central). However, UIndy scored on an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth when a throwing error on a steal of third by McCracken allowed him to score.
The Greyhounds tacked on three more in the sixth thanks to more defensive issues for the Miners. Following a pair of hits to start the inning, a bunt led to a throwing error trying to get the lead runner – then a subsequent error on the play allowed the other two runners to score. UIndy scored two more in the seventh for the final margin.
Karbowski had two hits for the Miners (9-10, 4-4 GLVC), who were outhit 12-7 in the nightcap. Starter
Keith Coulson (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) took the loss for S&T on the hill, going 4 2/3 innings and striking out four with only two of the five runs scored against him being earned.
The Greyhounds scored six unearned runs in the second game as the result of five S&T errors.
The Miners return to action on Saturday when they face Missouri-St. Louis in a noon doubleheader to open a four-game series at the S&T Baseball Field.
