JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Missouri S&T scored early and often Wednesday afternoon, racking up its highest run total in a game in three seasons as it rolled to a rain-shortened
22-7 win at Lincoln University.
The Miners scored multiple runs in five of the six innings that were played, including a nine-run outburst in the third inning.
S&T put three runs on the scoreboard in the opening inning, as
Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central) and
Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) drove in runs and the third run coming home as the result of a wild pickoff throw. In the second,
Adam Richter (Breese, Ill./Mater Dei) led off with a triple and scored on an infield out by
John Ceriotti (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS), then
Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) followed with a home run to give the Miners a 5-0 lead.
Lincoln got on the scoreboard in the second, but the Miners blew the game open in the third when they sent 13 hitters to the plate. The first batter in the third, Ulrich, belted a home run over the fence in left to get things started as S&T's first seven hitters reached base.
Brandon Farley (Vancouver, Wash./Heritage) and Richter got hits after the Ulrich homer, then a wild pitch scored Farley. Ceriotti and Bodenstab followed with hits, the latter of which scored Richter, which was followed by a double into the corner by
Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) to score two more runs.
Later in the inning, Ulrich tripled to the fence in center to drive in three, before he scored himself on a wild pitch.
The Blue Tigers scored five times in the bottom of the third, highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of Trevor Schneiders, but the Miners tacked on four runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Richter and Bodenstab drove in runs in the fifth – the other two runs scored on a passed ball and a pair of Lincoln errors following a stolen base by Ceriotti – while in the sixth, three runs came home on an error and the other on a run-scoring hit by Ceriotti.
The contest was called in the bottom of the sixth on account of rain.
The Miners, who improved to 8-7 on the season with the win, outhit the Blue Tigers 18-8, with Ulrich and Richter getting three hits apiece.
Trenton Green (Perryville, Mo./Perryville) picked up the win on the mound.
Missouri S&T will return to Great Lakes Valley Conference play Saturday when it opens a four-game series at the University of Indianapolis.
