Miners' first sweep of season leads to series win over UW-Parkside

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T secured its first doubleheader sweep of the 2015 season Monday afternoon, taking a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference contests from Wisconsin-Parkside at the S&T Baseball Field by scores of 2-1 and 12-2.

The wins moved the Miners back to the .500 mark for the season at 7-7 and gave them a win of the four-game set over the Rangers after losing the opening game Sunday.

S&T won a tight contest in the opener, thanks largely to the work of starter Aaron Bedsworth (New Bloomfield, Mo./New Bloomfield), who scattered seven hits and struck out three over six innings.  He stranded five Ranger runners in his final three innings on the hill and did some of the work himself on the defensive end with a hand in six outs along the way.

The Miners got their two runs in the third when Adam Richter (Breese, Ill./Mater Dei) led off with a double and was sacrificed to second.  Following a walk to Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) – and a balk by Parkside pitcher Mario Samuel that moved the runners ahead – Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) doubled down the line in left to score both runners.

Parkside got a run back in the fourth on back-to-back hits by Ryan Ruediger and Jake Kolasinski to start the inning, followed by a ground out by D.J. Peltz to score the run.  Bedsworth then got a strikeout and a ball back to the mound to escape any additional damage.

The Rangers got two runners on base in the fifth with two outs but couldn't score, then got their first two on in the sixth.  Bedsworth got out of that jam as well, spearing a line drive off the bat of Nick Janssen to end that inning.

Brown took over on the mound in the seventh and struck out the side to pick up his fourth save of the year.

Parkside outhit the Miners 7-5 in the first game; Richter had two of S&T's five hits.

S&T spotted the Rangers a run in the opening inning of game two, but tallied two in the bottom half of the inning and three in the second to take control of matters.

In the first, Brown singled with one out and came around to score on a triple by Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central)Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe) singled through a drawn-in infield to put the Miners in the lead.

Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, Mo./Lutheran-St. Charles) doubled with one out in the second and later scored on Karbowski's sacrifice fly.  Portwood followed that with a double to bring home Bodenstab and Brown to give S&T a 5-1 lead.

S&T added two more in the fifth, scoring the first on back-to-back doubles by Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) and Brandon Farley (Vancouver, Wash./Heritage).  Following a wild pitch, Richter singled home Farley.

Kolasinski homered for the Rangers in the sixth off Keith Coulson (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central), but the Miners busted the contest open in the bottom half of the frame after a two-out error allowed Karbowski to reach base.  Portwood singled and Tyler Johnson (Union, Mo./Union) drew a walk to load the bases, then Ulrich hit a grand slam to make it 11-2.

Ulrich, who had three hits and drove home five in game two, ended the contest two innings later when he drove in Karbowski.

The Miners had 19 hits in game two, led by Portwood's four.  S&T also got three hits from Bodenstab and two apiece from Johnson, Richter and Swindle.

Coulson allowed seven hits over his six innings of work to pick up his first win of the season.

The Miners return to action Wednesday when they face Lincoln University in a 12 p.m. contest in Jefferson City, Mo.  The game time for Wednesday was moved up two hours from its originally scheduled time due to potential weather issues later in the day.
