Lady Miners fall to #25 Winona State 6-5 on Sunday

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miner softball team fell to 25th ranked Winona State 6-5 on Sunday morning on the final day of the Midwest Region Dome Invitational at the Dome at the Ballpark in Rosemont, Ill.

S&T (1-4) struck first in the opening inning. With one out Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) doubled down the left field line, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East)'s single to second base. The Lady Miners had a chance for more, but Miranda Thompson (Ballwin, Mo./Marquette) grounded into an inning ending double play.

The Warriors (7-0) answered in the home half of the first. Reed Karsten led off with a ground-rule double to left, went to third on a groundout and scored on Ashley Walker's single to left. Walker advanced to second on an error by Victoria Culbertson (Nevada, Mo./Nevada) and came around to score on Jessica Kullman's single to center.

S&T regained the lead with two runs of its own in the top of the second as Lori Badalamenti (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland ) led off with a single to right center, advanced to second on Morgan Imhoff (Jamestown, Mo./Jamestown)'s sacrifice and scored on Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield)'s two-run homer to left field.

After giving up two runs in the first inning, Bethany Rader (Memphis, Mo./Scotland County ) settled in over the next four innings allowing just two baserunners and held the Winona offense at bay. In the home half of the sixth inning the Warriors scored four times to retake the lead. Back-to-back doubles by Walker and Morgan Lintz tied the game. Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) came into replace Rader to try and keep the game tied.

After a groundout, a fielder's choice produced the second run of the inning as Allyson O'Herron grounded a ball to Slemp. Slemp faked a throw to first and tried to get Natalie Kalmes, running for Lintz, at the plate but it wasn't in time. Samantha McLean reached on an error by Slemp to put runners on first and second with just one out. Kate Crow came off the bench to pinch hit for Jordan Petersen and singled to right to score McKenna Larsen. An error by Lori Badalamenti (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland ) allowed McLean to score from first.

Crow tried to advance to third on the play but was gunned down by a perfect relay from Badalamenti to Savannah Fedorchak (Oakville, Mo./Oakville) to Baker for the second out. After walk, the Lady Miners got out of the jam with a caught stealing.

S&T refused to quit in the seventh as Culbertson led off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara )'s ground out to short. Michaelis drove Culbertson home with a double to right center for her third double of the game. Slemp made it a one run game singling home Michaelis to put the tying run on base with one out. Fedorchak lined out to right and Thompson grounded out to third to end the game.

The Lady Miners outhit the Warriors 11-8 and were led by Michaelis with three hits while Slemp added two. Fedorchak, Thompson, Badalamenti, Imhoff, Baker and Culbertson had a hit each. Rader was the tough luck loser allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits in five-plus innings of work. Viets went the final inning allowing two runs, one earned, on a hit and a walk.

S&T is scheduled to return to action at the Teri Mathis-Zenner Memorial Tournament in Joplin, Mo., this Saturday and Sunday. The Lady Miners are scheduled to take on Fort Hays State at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
