ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Despite a couple of runs at Lewis in the second half, Missouri S&T was unable to get over the hump in the second half as if fell
77-64 to the Flyers in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
A cold stretch late in the first half allowed Lewis to build a 19-point by the intermission, then the Miners made several surges back at the Flyers in the second half to get the margin near the 10-point mark, but wasn't able to trim it into single digits as they fell for the 13
th time in their last 14 outings.
The Miners were tied with Lewis at 15 after
Danylo Zuikov (Kiev, Ukraine/LaLumiere School) drained a three-pointer at the 12:47 mark and were still within two after another basket by Zuikov a little over two minutes later. However, the Flyers went on a 9-0 run and outscored S&T 16-3 over the next six minutes to build a 15-point lead with four minutes to go in the half.
Lewis led 43-24 at the break and led by as much as 21 in the second half, but the Miners made a run and had the margin down to 12 at 49-37 after
Desmond Buerge (Carthage, Mo./Carthage) knocked down a pair of free throws with 13:23 to play. Then, after the Flyers used an 11-2 spurt to go back up by 21, S&T trimmed it back to 13 by the 6:34 mark on two more free throws by
Clement Bonardo (LaFarlede, France/Costebelle).
That would end up being as close as the Miners would get until the final margin, as S&T was unable to overcome the cold stretch in the first half that led to a 27.6 field goal percentage mark in the opening 20 minutes. The Miners finished the day at 33.9 percent from the floor.
Bonardo led three Miners in double figures with 14 points, while Zuikov and
Michael Nesbitt (Evansville, Ind./LaLumiere School) had 13 points apiece.
