Miners split with #13 St. Edward's to open 2015 baseball campaign

AUSTIN, Texas – Missouri S&T got a strong pitching performance from Micah Dohlen (Kent, Wash./Kent Lake) to open the 2015 season on a winning note, as the Miners took a 2-0 decision in the opening game of their doubleheader Friday afternoon at St. Edward's.  The host and 13th-ranked Hilltoppers won the nightcap 6-4.

Dohlen carried a one-hit shutout into the seventh inning, but after St. Edward's loaded the bases with two outs, Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) came in and retired the only batter he faced to preserve the win.  Dohlen gave up just three hits in 6 2/3 innings with three strikeouts, an outing that included four innings in which he retired the Hilltoppers in order.

After not hitting a home run in the entire 2014 season, the Miners scored their first run of 2015 via the long ball when Collin Zurweller (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) hit one out of the park with two outs in the second.

S&T added to the lead in the third with another two-out uprising, as Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) singled and stole second, then came in to score on a hit by Brown.

The Miners missed a chance for more runs in the inning as they loaded the bases and had another similar opportunity in the seventh when they filled the bases with one out but couldn't score.

St. Edward's loaded the bases in the bottom half of the seventh, but Brown got Kevin May to ground to short to end the game.

Tyler Johnson (Union, Mo./Union) had three of the Miners' eight hits in game one, while Zurweller had two.

The Miners took the lead in the opening inning of the nightcap when Bodenstab reached on a bunt single, moved to second on a hit by Brown, then took third on a throwing error and came in to score on a ground ball off the bat of Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe).

St. Edward's tied the game with a run in the bottom half of the frame, then scored twice in the second on a pair of RBI groundouts after a leadoff single and a double by Jonathan Davis started the inning.

S&T got a run back in the third when Portwood doubled in Brown, who had singled with one out and stole second, but the Hilltoppers answered that run with another in the bottom half on a two-out infield single by Mayo.

The Miners scored again in the fourth when Johnson opened the inning with a walk, stole second and scored on Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney)'s double into the gap, before St. Edward's scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to take a 6-3 lead.

S&T closed to within 6-4 in the eighth after Portwood reached on an infield hit with two outs and came into score on a throwing error, then got the tying run to the plate in the ninth before a double play ended the contest.

Brown had four hits for S&T in the second game, while Portwood drove in two of the four runs.  Each team had 11 hits in the nightcap.

Aaron Bedsworth (New Bloomfield, Mo./New Bloomfield), the first of three pitchers used by the Miners in game two, pitched into the sixth and took the loss.  He struck out four and allowed nine hits in 5 2/3 innings.

The Miners and Hilltoppers (5-4) will close out their weekend series with a single game Saturday afternoon.
