AUSTIN, Texas – Missouri S&T overcame an early four-run deficit Saturday to take a lead, but 13
th-ranked St. Edward's regained the advantage and went on to hand the Miners a
12-7 loss in the final game of S&T's season-opening three-game series.
S&T spotted the Hilltoppers four unearned runs in the opening inning, but responded with a five-run third to take the lead. The inning began with a hit by
Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, Mo./Lutheran-St. Charles), then scored with one out as
Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) reached on an error. A double by
Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central) followed, then after a walk to
Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe),
Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) doubled in Brown and Karbowski.
An RBI groundout by
Tyler Johnson (Union, Mo./Union) tied the score before
Collin Zurweller (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) singled home Ulrich to put the Miners in front.
St. Edward's regained the lead by scoring three times in the third and knocking S&T starter
Keith Coulson (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) out of the game in the process. A bases loaded walk to Wesley Harris brought in the go-ahead run.
The Hilltoppers added to their lead with three runs in the fourth before the Miners scored twice in the top of the sixth to draw to within three.
Matt Reschke (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) drew a leadoff walk and later scored on a hit by
Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman), then he scored later in the frame on an RBI single by Karbowski.
However, the Hilltoppers got those two runs back in the bottom of the sixth for the final scoring of the contest, although the Miners had runners on base in each of the final three innings.
Bodenstab and
Tyler Johnson (Union, Mo./Union) had three hits apiece for the Miners, who had 12 in the contest, but S&T also left eight runners on base to five for the Hilltoppers (6-4).
Coulson, one of five pitchers used by the Miners Saturday, was tagged with the loss.
The Miners (1-2) are scheduled to open their home slate Friday with a noon doubleheader against Concordia-St. Paul at the S&T Baseball Field as part of a four-game series with the Golden Bears.
