CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – After a first half showing that saw it take a lead into the locker room at halftime, Missouri S&T went cold over the final 15 minutes of play just as Southeast Missouri State warmed up, allowing the Redhawks to pull away for a
93-64 exhibition win Saturday afternoon.
The Miners used their defense in large part to hold a 41-40 lead at halftime, as they scored 21 points off of 15 Southeast turnovers in the first 20 minutes. S&T led for a good portion of the first half, holding a seven-point lead of 28-21 following a lay-in by
Zach Ellis (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield School) at the 8:34 mark.
Southeast was able to wipe out that lead before the half ended, but the Miners moved back in front on two free throws by freshman
Telloy Simon (Kitchener, Ont./St. Mary's) with two minutes left in the half and another free throw by newcomer Rokas Paulauskas in the final minute to take the one-point lead to the locker room.
Trey Kellum scored for the Redhawks on their first possession of the second half to put them back in front, but
Juwan Miller (Kitchener, Ont./Huron Heights) answered with a jumper at the 19:01 mark to give S&T at 43-42 advantage. That would turn out to be the Miners' last lead of the contest, although Ellis made a pair at the line with 15:49 left to knot the score at 47.
The Redhawks scored the next six points to take the lead for good and would end up outscoring the Miners 46-17 over the last 15:41 of the game as they shot 60 percent from the field in the second half.
S&T, who shot the ball well for a good portion of the first half and ended it at 40.6 percent, struggled from the floor after the break as they went just eight-of-37 (21.6 percent) after the break and hit only one three-point attempt in 14 tries in that span.
Simon had 15 points to lead the Miners, while Paulauskas recorded a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds; he also blocked three shots and made a pair of steals. Miller finished with five steals in the game as S&T recorded 13 off 25 Southeast turnovers.
But after getting 21 points in the first half off of the Redhawk mistakes, the Miners managed only three in the second half largely due to the presence of guard Marcus Wallace, who was saddled with foul trouble in the first half but had 14 points with three steals and only one turnover in the second half.
Wallace and Kellum had 15 points apiece to lead Southeast.
The Miners will open their 2015-16 regular season next weekend, facing Ashland Friday night and Lake Erie Saturday afternoon in Ashland, Ohio as part of the GLVC/GLIAC Midwest Region crossover.
