St. Louis, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Miners concluded their 2015 regular season with a
3-2 (25-22, 25-15, 20-25, 16-25, 15-9) on Saturday afternoon at Maryville University. With the win the Miners (22-10, 13-5) clinched second place in the GLVC's West Division.
S&T got off to a slow start against the Saints (12-19, 4-14 GLVC) trailing by four before going on a 8-3 run to take its first lead of the match at 12-11 on a double block by
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) and
Shelby Wagner (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit). The Miners pushed their lead to 15-12 before Maryville rattled off six straight forcing S&T to take a timeout. The two sides traded the first four points after the timeout before the Miners closed the set on an 8-2 run to win the opener 25-22.
Jackie Pyles (White Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) had couple of kills during the run and
Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) finished it off with her second kill of the set.
S&T broke open a tight second frame with a 9-2 run to grab a seven-point lead midway through the stanza. The Miners led by as many as 10 in the frame and registered 11 kills in the set and had a hitting percentage of .281. Haslag led S&T with five kills while
Ellen Schulz (Wildwood, Mo./Eureka) had four off the bench.
In the third frame the Saints held a five point lead midway through but the Miners began to rally getting to within 20-19 on a kill by
Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside). That would be the closest S&T got though as Maryville closed out the set scoring five of the final six points to force the fourth frame.
The Miners led early in the fourth stanza before the Saints went on a long run to take control. S&T cut the deficit to 12-11 before another long Maryville run saw it take an eight point lead. The Miners hit only .050 percent in the frame while the Saints had an attack percentage of .229.
In the fifth and deciding set Maryville took an early 3-0 lead thanks to three straight S&T errors. The Miners were able to right the ship though rattling off seven of the next eight points to take a 7-4 lead and wouldn't relinquish the advantage. Pyles had a pair of aces keying the run. The Saints got to within 8-6, but S&T pulled away with a 6-2 run to get to match point. The Miners closed the match out on a kill from
Ashley Allegri (Leawood, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) to win the set 15-9.
S&T finished the match with a hitting percentage of .151 and was led by Haslag with 13 kills. Moon had seven kills while Pyles, Allegri and
Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside) had six kills apiece. White dished out 41 assists and
Cydney Denning (San Antonio, Texas/Brandeis ) dug up 29 attacks.
Maryville had 54 kills in the contest and had an attack percentage of .148. Laura Welling had a match high 18 kills while Zoe Zeiter finished with 12 kills. Taryn Trubich dished out 37 assists and Ali Lampen had 29 digs.
The Miners will be back in action next Friday when it travels to East Peoria, Ill., for the 2015 GLVC Volleyball Tournament. Pairings and game time will be announced on Sunday.
