Miners season comes to close with 3-1 loss against Indianapolis

Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Miner volleyball season saw its 2015 season come to a close on Friday dropping a 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 23-25, 21-25) decision to the University of Indianapolis in the opening round of the 2015 GLVC Volleyball Championships. S&T finishes its season with a record of 22-11 which is the second most in a single season.

The Greyhounds (16-16), seeded third in the GLVC East, scored the first four points of the match before the Miners got on the board. S&T battled back to within 10-8 before a lengthy delay as the Miners protested UIndy being out of rotation. After the delay the 'Hounds scored four of the first five points to push the lead 14-9. The lead eventually grew to 22-15 on a kill by Katie Voelz.

The Miners began to chip away at the lead closing to 23-20 and forced Indianapolis to take a timeout. Claire Friedlund (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) had a pair of kills in the run and Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) was a part of three blocks. The 'Hounds though would hold onto win the frame 25-21 on a kill from Shelby Ruffner.

S&T opened the second set with a 10-4 run and forced Indianapolis to take an early timeout. The Miners kept the pressure on extending the lead to 18-10 after a kill by Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside). The 'Hounds made things interesting though with a 9-3 run to get within two on a kill from Ruffner. S&T pushed the lead back to four on back-to-back kills by Ashley Allegri (Leawood, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) to get to set point at 24-20. UIndy cut the deficit to two after a pair of errors from Allegri before Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) finished off the set with a kill.

In the swing set the Miners dug themselves an early hole trailing 10-4 and were down by as many as seven in the frame before going on a 9-2 run midway through the stanza to take an 18-17 lead on a block of Ruffner by Haslag.

S&T eventually grabbed a 22-20 advantage but the Greyhounds scored five of the final six points to take the set 25-23. Kacee Salyers put the 'Hounds on her back scoring the final four points of the frame.
Indianapolis led by as many as four in the fourth set but the Miners refused to go quietly cutting the deficit to one but were unable to overtake the Greyhounds as they went on to take the stanza 25-21 to win the match.

S&T recorded 56 kills against 14 errors in 141 attacks to finish the match with a .298 hitting percentage. Haslag led the Miners with 12 kills while Friedlund added 11 and Moon finished with 10. White dished out 43 assists and Jackie Pyles (White Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) dug up 15 attacks. S&T finished the contest with eight total blocks.

Indianapolis finished the contest with 65 kills but committed 23 errors in 157 chances and had an attack percentage of .268. Salyers led three 'Hounds in double figures with 18 kills while Becca Lira and Shelby Bontrager added 14 and 12 respectively. Maggie Gibson distributed 54 assists and Hailey Brown dug up 21 attacks.
