Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners won their 14
th consecutive season opener defeating Hannibal-LaGrange
81-49 on Friday night at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. S&T (1-0) had four players finish in double figures in scoring in the contest.
The Lady Miners shot the ball well to begin the game making 11-of-20 shots in the first 10 minutes of the contest. They outscored the Lady Trojans (0-3) 16-2 in the paint in the frame and turned seven HLG turnovers into eight points. They held a 25-6 lead at the end of the quarter behind eight points from
Jamy Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) and five from
Raetchel Gray (Allen, Okla./Byng ).
S&T cooled off a little bit the in the second period making only 40 percent of its shots which allowed the Lady Trojans to cut the lead to 16 by halftime. Kenna Greenway got hot in the quarter scoring eight points and hit a couple of three's. Hannibal-LaGrange made nearly half of its shots in the stanza and outscored the Lady Miners 16-13.
The two sides traded baskets to begin the second half before S&T pulled away late in the frame scoring 11 of the last 16 points to extend its lead to 22 by the end of the quarter.
Joe'l Bland (St. Charles, Mo./Homeschooled) led the Lady Miners with 11 points in the third quarter while Gray added eight. S&T shot 60 percent from the floor and connected on six of its seven attempts from beyond the arc.
The Lady Miners opened the final period with 14-2 run pushing its led to 32 points with 2:15 to go in the contest. S&T made only six shots in the final frame but did force seven turnovers leading to 10 points.
The Lady Miners finished the game shooting 49 percent (32-for-65) from the field and was 8-of-19 (42.1 percent) from beyond the arc. Gray had 17 points, nine assists and five steals in her S&T debut. J. Douvier and Bland added 16 points each while
Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) finished the contest with 11 points. The Lady Miners outrebounded the Lady Trojans 36-to-22 and forced 24 turnovers in the win.
Greenway led Hannibal-LaGrange with 16 points and Morgan Winkler dropped home 12. The Lady Trojans shot nearly 41 percent (20-for-49) from the field but were just 4-of-13 from downtown.
S&T returns to action next Friday hosting the University of Saint Mary (Kan.) in the Lady Miner Classic at 7:30 p.m. LeMoyne-Owen College and Saginaw Valley will play the first game next Friday at 5:30 p.m.
