Lady Miners improve to 2-0 with 72-38 win over Saint Mary

Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners improved to 2-0 with a 72-38 win over Saint Mary on Friday evening in the second game of the 2015 Lady Miner Classic. The 38 points were the fewest allowed by a Lady Miner squad in seven years when S&T beat Blackburn 100-36. In the first game on Friday Saginaw Valley defeated LeMoyne-Owen 85-49.

The Lady Miners used a 13-0 covering nearly seven minutes to break an early tie and grab a 15-2 lead. Sandra Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) and Jamy Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) combined to score 11 of the first 15 points for S&T. It shot the ball at a 47 percent clip in the first 10 minutes and held Saint Mary to just 1-of-9 shooting.

The Lady Miners, despite making only 5-of-18 shots in the second quarter, locked down defensively and were able to extend the lead 34-11 by halftime. S. Douvier had eight points at the break while J. Douvier added seven. Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School) and Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) chipped in with five points each. S&T struggled from the perimeter making only 2 of their 11 attempts from three but converted 17 turnovers into 18 points.

The Lady Miners opened the second half scoring 19 of the first 24 points to take its biggest lead of the game at 53-16 with 4:15 left in the third period. The Spires though ended the frame on a 12-2 run to cut the margin under 30.

Arand and Raetchel Gray (Allen, Okla./Byng ) combined for 13 of S&T's 21 points in the stanza as the team shot 38.1 percent (8-for-21) from the floor and was 3-of-7 from downtown.

The Lady Miners extended the lead back over 30 by the halfway mark of the fourth quarter and didn't see it slip below that margin the rest of the game. Kimberly Runge (Freedom, Wis./Freedom) scored six of her career-high 11 points in the final quarter.

S&T finished the contest shooting just 37 percent (25-of-68) from the floor, 5-for-20 from beyond the arc and shot 71 percent at the foul line. It outrebounded Saint Mary by a 46-to-33 margin and turned 27 Spire turnovers into 33 points. S. Douvier and Arand led all scorers with 14 points apiece with Runge also finishing in double figures.

Saint Mary was led in scoring by Imani Dixon with eight points while Imani White chipped in with seven. Jessica McAdams and Kelsey Switzer added six points each. The Spires made only 8-of-42 field goals (19 percent), shot just 6 percent (1-for-16) from behind the three-point line, but did shoot 75 percent at the foul line (21-for-28).
