Aurora, Ill. – The Missouri S&T Miners dropped a four set decision to 23
rd ranked Grand Valley State
3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 19-25, 12-25) in its final match at the 2015 Midwest Region Crossover on Saturday afternoon.
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) and
Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) had 14 kills apiece but it wasn't enough as the Lakers had four players finish in double figures.
S&T (15-8) held a four point lead midway through the opening set and forced Grand Valley (13-7) to take a timeout. After the timeout the Miners stretched the lead to five when the Lakers began to make their comeback going on a 13-4 run to take a 23-19 lead on a service ace from Kaylene Norris. S&T cut the deficit to two on a couple of occasions but wouldn't get closer than that as Grand Valley took the opener 25-22.
The second set was the complete opposite of the first as the Lakers built an early seven point lead only to watch the Miners storm back with a 15-4 run to take a 21-20 lead on a kill by Haslag. Grand Valley tied it on the next swing as Betsy Ronda hammered home an overpass. S&T was undeterred however scoring the final four points of the set to even the match at 1-1.
In the swing set the Lakers raced out to an early lead and didn't look back leading by as many as five in the stanza. The Miners got it to within two on a couple of occasions but weren't able to get any closer as Grand Valley took the third set 25-19.
In the fourth frame the Lakers scored nine of the first 12 points to begin the set and then used a 7-0 run to build a 13-point lead en route to a 25-12 set win.
S&T finished the match with 54 kills against 19 errors in 170 chances and had an attack percentage of .206. Haslag and Combs paced the offensive attack while
Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) added nine kills.
Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside) dished out 39 assists and
Jackie Pyles (White Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) dug up 25 attacks.
Grand Valley registered a .262 hitting percentage for the match with 59 kills against 14 errors in 172 total attacks. Kaleigh Lound and Staci Brower had 12 kills apiece while Ronda added 11 and Jessica Majerle had 10. Katie Olson distributed 30 assists and Taylor Shomin dug up 24 attacks.
The Miners are back at home on Friday hosting Truman State in a GLVC contest beginning at 7 p.m. Friday night's match is the annual Pink Out match with the first 125 S&T students receiving a free pink t-shirt with a valid student I.D.
