INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Foul issues and poor shooting in the second half plagued Missouri S&T Sunday afternoon, as it dropped a
98-74 Great Lakes Valley Conference contest to seventh-ranked Indianapolis.
The Greyhounds held the Miners to a season-low 37 percent from the field – and just 29.3 percent in the second half – while shooting 60 percent themselves from the floor. S&T was also outscored 30-17 from the free throw Iine, but by a wider margin for a good portion of a contest in which three Miners were disqualified due to fouls by the middle of the second half.
Indianapolis never trailed in the contest, but the Miners had the game tied at 10 a little over five minutes into play following a lay-in by
Curtis Okafor (Kansas City, Mo./Bishop Miege). The Greyhounds regained the lead on a three-point play by Lucas Barker 15 seconds after the Okafor basket and would not trail from that point forward.
S&T was within three midway through the first half after a basket by
Juwan Miller (Kitchener, Ont./Huron Heights), but a little over a minute later, Eric Davidson drained a three-pointer – the first of the game for either team – to spark an 11-2 burst for the Greyhounds to give them a 12-point advantage.
UIndy would hit four more treys before the half ended, as it connected on 56 percent of its shots in the opening half to take a 48-38 lead into the locker room.
The Greyhounds maintained a double figure lead throughout the second half, but the Miners had a chance to get within 10 about four minutes after the break. Following a turnover by S&T, UIndy extended the lead to 16 with two free throws and then a basket by Brennan McElroy, before using a 13-3 stretch to push the margin to 24.
Miller led the Miners with 16 points, while
Desmond Buerge (Carthage, Mo./Carthage) finished with 12 and
Zach Ellis (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield School) with 11. S&T made just three of its 20 attempts from three-point range in the contest.
Six Greyhounds scored in double figures, led by Joe Lawson with 19 points. UIndy also outrebounded the Miners 42-30, but did commit 19 turnovers out of which S&T made 13 steals.
The Miners (8-3, 1-2 GLVC) will host sixth-ranked Bellarmine, a 70-50 winner Sunday over William Jewell, Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Billy Key Court.
