ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T went ice cold over the final eight minutes to play Thursday, surrendering a narrow lead in an eventual
87-70 Great Lakes Valley Conference loss to Quincy at Billy Key Court.
The Miners took a 62-60 lead on
Desmond Buerge (Carthage, Mo./Carthage)'s three-pointer with 7:57 remaining in the contest, but made only one of their final 11 shots from the floor as the Hawks outscored S&T 27-8 down the stretch.
Quincy took the lead back for good after the Buerge trey on Herm Senor II's three-point play, then nearly a minute later, Scottie Bruxvoort hit a jumper after the Hawks got an offensive rebound, sparking a 15-4 stretch in which Quincy scored on seven consecutive possessions.
While the Miners went cold, the Hawks connected on seven of the eight field goal attempts they took in the final eight minutes and also hit 12-of-13 at the free throw line after a sluggish start from the charity stripe.
S&T and Quincy were in a tight contest in the early stages, with the Hawks holding the lead for the better part of the period. The Miners held an early lead following a Buerge three-pointer and were within two at 21-19 after a
Zach Ellis (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield School) lay-in at the 8:03 mark.
Quincy used an 11-4 burst to take its largest lead of the opening half at 34-24, but the Miners clawed back and got the margin down to three on a driving layup by Ellis in the final minute. The Hawks got two free throws from Senor before halftime to take a five-point lead.
Early in the second half, the Hawks extended their lead to eight, but S&T surged back into the contest and regained the lead at 55-54 on a basket by
Marcus Walden (Augusta, Ga./Academy of Richmond Co.) with 9:47 to go. The two teams would swap the lead over the next two minutes, with S&T taking the lead three different times before Senor's three-point play put Quincy up for good.
The Miners forced the Hawks into 24 turnovers in the game, but scored only 18 points off those mistakes as they shot just 34.8 percent from the floor and eight-of-27 from three-point range. S&T was also outrebounded by 14 rebounds in a contest in which it dealt with foul issues, eventually losing three players to fifth fouls before the night ended.
Buerge led S&T with 15 points, while Ellis finished with 12 and
Danylo Zuikov (Kiev, Ukraine/LaLumiere School) with 11. S&T got eight rebounds from
Ervin Sarajlic (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville), but no other Miner had more than four.
Senor led all scorers with 19 points and Evan McGaughey added 17 as the Hawks (11-9, 5-5 GLVC) shot 66.7 percent in the second half to finish at 56.5 percent.
Missouri S&T fell to 8-10 overall and 1-9 in GLVC play with its eighth straight setback and will host Truman State Saturday at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs bumped off Drury Thursday in Springfield 85-81.
