ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T suffered through a cold shooting game for the second time in three days, resulting in an
84-58 Great Lakes Valley Conference loss Saturday afternoon to Southern Indiana.
The struggles for the Miners -- who made just 34 percent of their shots in Thursday's loss to sixth-ranked Bellarmine -- came right from the outset, as they missed their first 14 shots from the field and fell behind 20-0 before
Curtis Okafor (Kansas City, Mo./Bishop Miege)'s lay-in with 9:36 left in the first half ended the drought.
S&T was able to cut the Screaming Eagles' lead down to 13 before the first half ended, then got the margin down to 11 early in the second half at 33-22 when
Michael Nesbitt (Evansville, Ind./LaLumiere School) tipped in a miss by
Desmond Buerge (Carthage, Mo./Carthage). However, the Eagles got back-to-back baskets from Gavin Schumann to go back up by 15, then rattled off a 17-0 run before the midway point of the second half to extend the lead to its largest margin of 32.
The Miners hit just six of their 28 field goal attempts in the first half (21.4 percent) and finished the day at 36.1 percent. Meanwhile, the Screaming Eagles (10-2, 3-1 GLVC) shot 56.7 percent in the second half to finish at 47.4 and also held the advantage on the boards of 38-35.
Zach Ellis (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield School) was the only Miner in double figures with 14 points, while Schumann recorded 16 points to lead a four-player contingent in double figures for USI.
The Miners, 8-5 overall and 1-4 in the GLVC, head on the road for their next four games, beginning Thursday when they face William Jewell in a 7:30 p.m. contest in Liberty, Mo. S&T will play its next six games against teams from the GLVC West Division.
