Box Score KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – For the first time in the 2014 season, the Missouri S&T men's soccer team posted more than one goal in a game – and that second goal was enough to propel it into the victory column.
Thanks to goals by
Martin Klevjer (Trondheim, Norway/) and
Maxi Fuchs (Munich, Germany/), the Miners gained a split of their weekend road trip as they downed Truman State
2-1. Klevjer scored in the opening half and Fuchs in the second, before the Miners held off a late rush by the host Bulldogs after they got to within a goal.
Truman State controlled the play through the first one-third of the contest, but it was Missouri S&T who got the first goal of the game when Klevjer hit a shot that ricocheted off a Bulldog defender and into the bottom right corner of the net at the 37:53 mark.
The Miners, despite being outshot 6-2 and giving up five corner kicks to the Bulldogs in the first half, took that 1-0 lead to the intermission.
S&T added to its lead in the 68
th minute when Fuchs took a pass from
Eduardo Abichabki (Sao Jose do Rio Pardo, Brazil/Colegio Unigrau) and put a shot past TSU goalkeeper Drew Garrone. But five minutes later, the Bulldogs pulled to within a goal when Corey Nolte scored on penalty kick.
After the Nolte goal that cut the lead in half, the Miners had to withstand a couple of late flurries by the Bulldogs, with a pair of blocked shots in one sequence and a late shot by Josh Hall that went wide of the goal.
The Bulldogs (3-3-1, 2-3-1 GLVC) held a 15-7 advantage in shots, but only four of the 15 Truman State attempts were on goal. TSU did have nine corner kick opportunities in the contest.
S&T goalkeeper
James Holloway (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Notre Dame Regional) made three saves as the Miners snapped a four-game winless streak to improve to 3-4-1 overall and to 2-3-1 in GLVC play.
The Miners will be at home next weekend, beginning with a Friday night match against Missouri-St. Louis at 7:30 p.m. at the S&T Soccer Field.
