Miners make it four straight with sweep at McKendree

Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Miners ran their win streak to four in a row and five of their last six with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-17) sweep at McKendree on Tuesday evening in a non-conference match. The Miners (6-5) did it with defense holding the Bearcats (5-5) to a .074 hitting percentage, forcing them into 24 errors and registered nine total blocks in earning a third straight sweep.

S&T raced out to a 7-1 lead to begin the match and forced an early timeout by McKendree. The Miners kept the pressure on eventually building a 23-9 lead, but saw the Bearcats go on a 10-1 run to pull within 24-19. S&T was able to close it out though on a service error.

The Miners recorded just eight kills in the stanza, but took advantage of 12 attack errors and two service errors to win the opener. Alison Mueller (Bartelso, Ill./Mater Dei ) had three kills in the frame while Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) added two more.

The second set was tight early on before S&T broke free with an 8-3 run to build a 17-12 advantage and forced McKendree to take a timeout. They would get to within 18-15 but only to see the Miners pull back away scoring seven of the last 10 points to head into the intermission with a commanding 2-0 lead.

S&T got its offense going in the second frame registering 13 kills against four errors to finish with a hitting percentage of .375 and held the Bearcats to a .111 hitting percentage (11k/7e/36ta). Mueller and Friedlund combined for 10 of the team's kills in the stanza.  

The third set featured nine ties and two lead changes and went back-and-forth for a majority of the set. The Miners were able to break free finishing the match on a 12-4 run to secure the sweep.

S&T finished the set hitting .344 percent with 14 kills against three errors in 32 chances while holding McKendree to a .167 percentage (11k/5e/36ta).
Mueller led all players with 12 kills while Friedlund contributed eight kills. Moon, Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) and Allie Plunk (Hurst, Texas/Birdville) added four kills each. Plunk also dished out 18 assists while Jackie Pyles (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield) had 16 digs. The Miners finished the match with a hitting percentage of .245 and had 35 kills against 11 errors in 98 attacks.

Arela Williams led the Bearcats with 11 kills. Lauren Apetz and Sophie Fairman added seven kills each. Abbey Hanger distributed 10 assists and Rebecca Nauman had nine digs. As a team, McKendree finished with 33 kills.

S&T is back at home on Friday when it plays host to William Jewell beginning at 7 p.m.
