Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Miner volleyball squad overcame a slow start to sweep past Bellarmine
3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-8) on Saturday afternoon in Rolla. S&T (4-5, 2-1 GLVC) hit a season high .320 percent in the contest and averaged 14 kills per set. It was the second straight win for S&T.
The Miners raced out to an early 3-1 lead, but Bellarmine (4-3, 1-2 GLVC) stormed back scoring 15 of the next 21 points to take a 16-10 lead and forced S&T to take a timeout. After the timeout the Miners turned the tables on the Knights scoring eight straight points to retake the lead at 18-16. S&T then extended its lead to 23-19. Bellarmine climbed back into the set scoring three straight points and forced the Miners to take their second timeout of the frame.
Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood)'s kill out of the break set S&T up with two set points, but the Knights evened it with kills from
Hayden Dailey and Margaret Horihan.
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) ended the stanza with back-to-back kills to give the Miners the set 26-24.
S&T started the second set strong scoring eight of the first 11 points. It would be a lead it wouldn't relinquish building a 13-point lead and eventually won by a 25-16 score. The offense hit .375 percent in the set recording 15 kills against three errors while holding Bellarmine to a .067 hitting percentage. Moon paced the attack with five kills while
Claire Friedlund (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) and
Katie McDonald (Orland Park, Ill./Providence Catholic) had three kills each.
The third set was all Miners. S&T gave up the first point of the set, but quickly recovered with a 10-2 run to take control. The Knights got as close as 10-4 before the Miners outscored them 15-4 the rest of the way to complete the sweep.
Moon led S&T with 13 kills while Friedlund added eight, Haslag and McDonald added seven kills apiece.
Allie Plunk (Hurst, Texas/Birdville) dished out 30 assists while
Jackie Pyles (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield) had 10 digs.
Emily McDaniel led Bellarmine with eight kills while Dailey had seven kills. Allie Muha had 25 assists while Jaclyn Ohlmann had 15 digs. The Knights finished the match with .074 hitting percentage.
The Miners are back at home on Sunday afternoon when they take on Southern Indiana at 1 p.m.
