Miners take series finale to gain Sunday split at Quincy

4/6/2014 6:20:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 QUINCY, Ill. -- After dropping the first three games of its weekend series at Quincy, Missouri S&T's baseball team got the final game of the set as MIchael Lockett and Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) drove in two runs apiece to back the work of four pitchers that combined for the victory.

Micah Dohlen (Kent, Wash./Kent Lake), who had made only one previous start this season, threw the first three innings before turning the game over to Mack Preston (Shawnee, Kan./Shawnee Mission Northwest) for the next two.  Blake Stephens (Chillicothe, Mo./Chillicothe) took over in the sixth and after getting into trouble in the seventh, handed it over to Jacob Hinton (Westmoreland, Tenn./Westmoreland) for the final 2 1/3 innings.

The biggest out recorded by a Miner hurler came from Hinton, who got the Miners out of a mess in the seventh after the Hawks loaded the bases with two outs on a hit, a walk prior to his arrival on the mound and a catcher's interference call by getting Matt Marek to ground out. Hinton picked up his third save of the year by allowing only one hit and fanning two while recording his seven outs to save the win for Preston.

Quincy took the initial lead in game two on Marek's RBI single in the first.  But the Miners came right back with a two-out uprising in the second to go in front, starting with a hit by Matt Reschke (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South).  That was followed by a walk to Brett Yasui (Mililani, Hawaii/Kamahameha) and a wild pitch to move the runners up for Ulrich to drive them in with a hit.

The Miners added to their lead in the sixth as Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) led off with a hit, then stole second and scored on a single to center by Lockett.  After the Miners escaped the Quincy threat in the seventh, Lockett singled home Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage), who had reached on an error to open the eighth, to extend the margin.

S&T added another run later in the inning as Lockett stole second and came around to score when Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe) reached on a throwing error by third baseman Matthew Buck.

Lockett had two hits and two runs batted in for the Miners (13-18, 8-10 Great Lakes Valley Conference), while Brown had two hits and Ulrich drove in the two runs with his second inning hit.  S&T outhit the Hawks (11-16, 8-9 GLVC) 10-8 in the nightcap.

In game one, the Miners jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening inning.   Brown opened the inning with an opposite field single and after a one-out walk to Lockett, scored on Portwood's double.  Moments later, Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central) went the other way for a hit that drove home Lockett and Portwood.

The Hawks got two of the runs back in their half of the first on a two-run single by Mitchell Broughton, but the Miners added to their lead in the second when Yasui doubled with one out, stole third and came in to score when Brown reached on an fielder's choice.

Quincy cut the lead back to one in the fourth when Broughton walked and moved on to third on a double by Marek.  Broughton then scored when Yasui picked up a loose ball with his mask, but S&T starter Eric Van Dyke (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek) struck out the next three hitters to keep the Miners in front.

However, Van Dyke was unable to retire any of the four hitters he faced in the fifth as Quincy grabbed the lead by scoring three times.  The inning started with a hit from Larry Sartin, then a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt and a bunt single loaded the bases.  Kory Wisdom followed with a two-run double to put the Hawks in the lead and Broughton greeted reliever Ryan Bearden (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) with an RBI single for the third run of the frame.

The Miners got two runners on base in the sixth on a hit and an error but couldn't score, then got a rally going in the seventh when Brown led off with a double.  With one out, Lockett reached on an infield hit to score Brown and cut the lead to one, then Portwood followed with a hit to move the tying run into scoring position.

Quincy closer Matt Fishman, who came into the game at the start of the sixth, got a strikeout and a pop out to end the contest.

S&T outhit Quincy 9-7 in the opener as Brown, Portwood and Yasui all had two hits apiece.

Missouri S&T will step outside the GLVC for a non-conference tilt Wednesday at Southwest Baptist.  First pitch will be at 3 p.m. in Bolivar, Mo.
