Lady Miners split with Saints on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T softball team split a doubleheader against Maryville on Saturday afternoon dropping the first game 4-2 in 10 innings then bounced back to take the second game 3-2. Saturday's game was also a celebration of the 35th anniversary season of softball at Missouri S&T with several softball alums in attendance.

S&T (7-22, 4-14 GLVC) broke on top in the opener scoring twice in the first inning. Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) led off with an infield single and went to second on a groundout. She scored on Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East)'s double to right center. Slemp advanced to third on a single by Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) then scored when Baker stole second and the catcher's throw was off the mark.

The Saints (10-14, 6-6 GLVC) got a run back in the third due to some wildness by S&T starter Bethany Rader (Memphis, Mo./Scotland County ). Rader walked three batters and threw two wild pitches allowing a run to score. Maryville then tied the game in the fourth on a home run by Alex Flasch to lead off the inning.

S&T had its chances to break it open getting a runner to third with one out in the first and third innings but were unable to cash in with a big hit. It had another chance in the fifth as Davis tripled to left center with two outs, but was left stranded.

The Saints had a chance to take the lead in the sixth putting two on with two outs before Amber Duncan (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) got Shelby Steinkamp to fly out to Cassie Rizzo (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) to end the threat.

The Lady Miners had a chance to win the game in the ninth. With one out Baker walked and was lifted for a pinch-runner. Victoria Culbertson (Nevada, Mo./Nevada) came in to run and advanced to second on a sacrifice from Adrienne Kruse (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville). Savannah Fedorchak (Oakville, Mo./Oakville) hit one back up the middle but was unable to get it past the pitcher to end the inning.

Maryville scored twice in the 10th as Nicole Taylor singled to left center to bring in Ashley Marks with the go-ahead run. The Saints added another run on a single by Jennifer Maynez. S&T brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the frame, but Davis was retired on a bang-bang play at first to end the game.

The Lady Miners finished the contest with five hits and were led by Davis with two. Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf), Slemp and Baker had a hit each. Duncan came on in the fifth and went the rest of the way allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits. She walked one and struck out one.

S&T scored first again in the second game on a two-run home run from Dana Lawson (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette). With one out in the second Kruse walked and went to second on a sacrifice by Jackie Lybarger (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley West). With two outs Lawson lined a 0-1 pitch off the top of the fence in right center for her second homer of the season.

Maryville tied the game in the third loading the bases with two outs. Taylor hit a ball back up the middle that Davis made a diving stop on but she was unable to get the out at second which allowed both runs to score.

The Lady Miners regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Rizzo led the inning off reaching on a hit-by-pitch and went to second on a sacrifice from Davis. Michaelis then reached on an error by the shortstop to put runners on the corner with one out. Slemp broke the tie lining out to center and Rizzo scored just ahead of the tag.

After allowing a lead-off single in the fourth, Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) set down the final 12 hitters she faced to pick up the complete game win and improve to 4-8. She allowed two runs on five hits while striking out three in seven innings.

S&T was held to just four hits in the nightcap and was led by Lybarger with two. Lawson and Lori Badalamenti (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland ) had a hit each.

The Lady Miners are back at home on Sunday when they face Missouri-St. Louis in a GLVC doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
